Position Summary:  

 

We seek a ​well-organized and principled candidate to ​join ​the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Finance Department. The​ Staff ​​Accountant will ​assume primary responsibility in the areas of gift processing, ​accounts payable, ​and other duties as assigned​.​ 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

  • Gift Processing 

    • ​​​Oversee and direct all aspects of day-to-day gift processing.​​ 
    • ​​Compile daily checks/cash batches for deposit. ​ 
    • Communicate with the Advancement team to determine how gifts are applied.  
    • Record transactions in Tessitura, assuring accuracy. 
    • Provide reports and other tools to keep Leadership and Advancement team apprised of major giving. 

 

  • Accounts Payable 

    • Maintain vendor records, verify vendor information.  
    • ​​Process​ invoices and payments by check or bank transfers. ​​     ​​ 
    • ​​​Communicate with outside vendors - respond efficiently to vendor inquiries ​​ 
    • ​​​Coordinate with other internal departments to process vendor payments accurately and timely. 
  • Other 

    • Account reconciliations performed during the month-end procedures. 
    • Support the rest of the Finance team, providing administrative support. 
    • Assist during the year-end financial statement audit. 
    • ​​Other duties as assigned.​ 

 

Required Qualifications  

  • ​​​​Associate degree in Accounting ​​OR pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting OR two or more years of experience in Accounting.​​ 
  • ​​Understand fundamental accounting concepts. ​ 
  • ​Proficient Microsoft Office knowledge and skills, including advanced knowledge of Excel.  
  • ​Attention to detail and dedication to accuracy.  
  • ​Excellent time management and organizational skills. 
  • ​Strong work ethic and ability to treat confidential and private information with discretion. 
  • ​Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • ​Ability to act independently, take initiative, and meet changing priorities. 
  • ​Successful experience working in, and contributing to, a collaborative, team environment. 

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting 

Additional Information

  • This is a salaried, non-union position  
  • This position will begin November 1, 2025 or after
  • All positions at the DSO require the successful completion of a background check prior to beginning employment. A criminal record does not automatically disqualify candidates.     
     

Physical Requirements:  This role primarily works in an office environment and frequently has prolonged periods of sitting and looking at a computer screen.  

 

Position Reports to: Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting 

 

Works closely with: Other members of the Finance team, Advancement Team, other internal DSO departments and vendors.
