Join the City of Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation team as a Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator and help enhance the lives of community members through adaptive and therapeutic programming.
As the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing adaptive recreation programs and inclusive activities for youth, adults, and seniors with disabilities. You'll collaborate with staff, community partners, and caregivers to ensure participants have access to enriching and engaging experiences that support physical, emotional, and social well-being.

About this Opportunity 
Organizes and coordinates programming in the areas of therapeutic recreation, including Special Olympics, adaptive programs, general community-based therapeutic recreation, senior and active older adults and assisting with department special events.

Position Duties

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and coordinates recreational programs, activities and/or events for assigned area(s)
  • Advocate, research and promote programming for people with disabilities and senior populations in the community
  • Coordinate scheduling of facilities based upon program needs
  • Recruits, manages and trains volunteers for assigned area(s)
  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, training staff and conducting performance evaluations
  • Collaborates and coordinates with internal and external partners and organizations to maximize resources and generate positive outcomes
  • Identifies and pursues programming for areas of community need/interest and efficiently and effectively promotes and make marketing recommendations
  • Creates and maintains program budgets, rosters and reports and effectively evaluates program effectiveness
  • Investigates accident and incident reports and enforces safety practices to promote accident-free operations of programs, facilities, and equipment
  • Responds to customer complaints and inquiries in a timely manner and identifies resolutions with a “win-win” attitude
  • Identify, solicit and secure external funding sources to support and enhance program operations and offerings
  • Advocates, fosters, and embraces awareness and acceptance of diversity
  • Performs related work as required and/or assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Social Work, Leisure Studies, Recreation Administration, Event Management or related field AND
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in managing specialized community recreational programs, services or facilities OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License
  • A Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate and a Standard First Aid Certificate, issued by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized certifying agency
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)

Work Schedule

  • M-F 8-5, schedule can vary based on programming needs (including nights and weekends)
