BASF/Chemetall, is the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, and a leading supplier of applied surface treatments worldwide. At BASF/Chemetall, we develop and manufacture tailor-made technology and system solutions for applied surface technology. Our products protect metals from corrosion, facilitate forming and treatment, prepare parts optimally for the painting process and ensure excellent coating adhesion. Our technologies and products are used in a variety of industries and end markets such as automotive, aerospace, aluminum finishing and metal forming.
The chemical treatment of metal surfaces is BASF/Chemetall core competence. The focus of our worldwide activities is on the development and implementation of customized technology and system solutions for surface treatment.
The Team Leader, Analytical Lab coordinates all phases of research and development of new products as well as the management of the current product line. This person fosters an environment of creativity and sharing ideas. There may be supervision of other professionals who are assigned to the group. In addition, working well with the other team leaders and other parts of the lab is essential.
As a Team Leader, Analytical Lab (ECT-Chemetall), you create chemistry by...
- Supervises the analytical laboratories.
- Assigns work and establishes priorities to samples received from the field to ensure accurate results and a quick turnaround.
- Reviews all Lab Reports prior to distribution to the field for completeness and accuracy.
- Evaluate and develop new test methods as required and prepare technical information on new products. (Product Profiles and/or Process Instructions)
- Establish yearly CapEx budget and forecast out 3-5 years.
- Directly interfaces with sales force and product managers regarding lab projects; provides other analytical field support as needed.
- Ensures the analytical functions/needs of the corporation are satisfied.
- Maintain all equipment in excellent working condition; troubleshoot problems as required and continue to develop expertise in operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintain supplies for all analytical requirements in accordance with BASF/Chemetall quality system.
- Evaluate and make recommendations to upgrade capabilities as appropriate.
- Review and update Standard Analytical Operating Procedures- Work Instructions.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating the Titration Manual and Test Procedures.
- Train sales personnel on proper analytical procedures and techniques as required.
- Present seminars or lectures to department on analytical topics.
- Organize guest lectures or seminars as appropriate.
- Complete any special projects assigned by the Manager, Technical Support.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Make recommendations for capital equipment and upgrades.
- Make recommendations for manpower planning. Interview and recommend candidates for analytical positions.
- Conduct performance reviews in accordance with BASF/Chemetall policies.
- Create a cohesive team that works well with all other members of the Technical Marketing Laboratories (all locations) as well as other functions within the company.
- B.S. Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in formulating, analytical analysis, analytical testing parts, and managing people is required.
- Analytical instrument experience. (ICP, XRF, HPLC, SEM, WDXRF)
- Method development and validation and quality control system knowledge.
- Strong working knowledge of business operations – manufacturing, marketing, financial, along with management and training skills.
- Good management and training skills.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to communicate results also to non-technical audience.
- Intercultural skills as the function will report into Global Labservices.

Pay transparency
BASF is committed to pay transparency practices. The competitive Pay Range for this role is $110,000 - $130,000. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
