About the Department

Hepatitis C Investigator

Under the supervision of the Communicable Disease Manager, the hepatitis C Investigator is responsible for public health disease surveillance work concerning hepatitis C. Investigators will interview health care providers and individuals in the community who are positive for hepatitis C, recommend appropriate infection control guidance, provide guidance to healthcare and treatment resources, and report case investigation information through the Michigan Disease Surveillance System.  This is an APPOINTED POSITION

Position Duties

  • Reviewing and interpreting viral hepatitis test results and determining case status
  • Conducts in-depth, confidential investigations on all patients infected with hepatitis C to gather relevant medical, demographic, and treatment information via phone
  • Document investigations and interviews in detail in state database (Michigan Disease Surveillance System)
  • Works with diverse communities throughout Detroit
  • Communicates with medical providers to perform appointment verification checks and review of medical records
  • Provides information and educates individuals on the causes, symptoms, effects, treatment and methods of prevention for hepatitis C verbally and with written material
  • Makes referrals to health clinics, encouraging individuals to obtain medical evaluation and following up to ensure they receive appropriate treatment
  • Assist with monitoring the quality of the hepatitis C disease surveillance data
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in public health, social science, or another health-related field or must be a registered nurse
  • One year experience with proven familiarity with community and public health programs.
  •  Computer literacy with primary software programs such as Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong analytics and assessment skills 
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills
  • Outstanding ability to work effectively in teams of diverse people and organizations 
  • Strong interviewing skills and customer service
