About the Department

*APPLICANTS MUST BE A CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT IN GRADES 10, 11, OR 12*
As an intern at the Oceanside Public Library, you will promote literacy, diversity, and the love of reading. Interns will work 15 hours per week for 12 weeks. These work hours will take place at the Civic Center Library during Library open hours Monday through Friday. Interns will take on leadership roles in the library, work on committees, oversee projects and assist with day-to-day Library operations. There will be a large focus on personal and professional development, leadership, gaining practical job experience and developing soft skills. Assignments will depend on the needs of the library and interests of the intern. Possible assignments could include social media, programming, photography, library displays and collection responsibilities. The ideal candidate for an internship with the Oceanside Public Library is able to work independently, seek out ways to enhance library services, and be an engaged team player. Candidates must be hard working, motivated, curious, and comfortable with basic technology.
Internship dates are rolling, and summer-only positions are not available.

- Take on leadership roles during events and programs.
- Form and work in committees to oversee projects.
- Participate in career preparation and resume improvement workshops.
- Learn the principles of library budgeting, marketing and networking.
- Take on an active role in redesigning and improving the library’s Teen Zone space.
- Learn about Teen collections and actively work to improve them by seeking and recommending new additions of Young Adult books of all genres
- Assist with the improvement of Oceanside Public Library’s Teen webpage design and social media presence.
- Basic principles and practices of assigned area of responsibility.
- Modern office procedures, computer software and hardware.
- Principles of mathematics, reading, and writing.
- Interest in working with children, teens, and their families as well as the oceanside community.
- Learn to operate assigned equipment safely and properly.
- Learn to interpret the policies and procedures of the assigned department(s).
- Learn and understand the organization and operation of the assigned department and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
- Plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of business.
- Work efficiently with others on team projects.
