PURPOSE OF POSITION: Reporting to the Chief Finance and Operations Officer, the Senior Accountant is responsible for a wide variety of accounting duties in connection with the preparation of the Agency’s financial statements, management reports and other supporting documentation and schedules.  Prepares month-end and year-end GAAP financial statements.  Assists with preparing the annual budget and tax return.   Prepares month-end and year-end journal entries, account reconciliations and financial analysis.  Participates in the annual independent audit process as assigned. Assists with various special accounting projects as assigned. Processes bi-weekly payroll.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Covenant House Florida reserves the right to unilaterally modify, remove, or add to any of the following:

  • Prepares. reviews, or directs all accounting entries including posting of AP/AR and payroll transactions to journals or ledger.
  • Prepares invoice/billings and collect funds for the support of grant funded expenditures. 
  • Prepares all applicable budgets and fiscal reports for grant programs and ensures their timely submission.
  • Assists the Chief Finance Officer in completing the monthly and fiscal year end closing activities.
  • Process and balance the bi-weekly payroll and records payroll data such as garnishments, vacation time, insurance and 403(b) deductions into accounting software. 
  • Assists the Chief Finance and Operations Officer in preparing internal/external accounting reports, and financial statements.
  • Verifies and posts details of business transactions, such as funds received and disbursed; reconcile accounts to ledgers or computer spreadsheets and databases.
  • Reconciles bank and credit card statements, 
  • Supports Chief Finance and Operations Officer with the preparation of annual budget, audits, 990 tax return, fiscal reporting requirements, and working with accounting vendors.
  • Monitor the agency's grant vouchering system to ensure that grant funds are coming in accordance with the grant/contract agreements.
  • Maintain accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in in Finance, Accounting, or closely related financial degree required 



EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of three (3) years accounting experience in a similar position or higher. A firm grasp of budgeting, cost control principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Experience working in a social service environment and familiarity with non-profit accounting and best practices is preferred and considered a plus; 

SCHEDULE: 

Working flexible hours as required to meet agency needs that may take place outside of regular Monday-Friday business hours; this may include evenings, weekends, and early mornings.

SKILLS:

Must be a self-starter, goal oriented and team player with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to build and maintain good professional relationships with various community leaders, nonprofit community organizations, donors, corporations, government agencies (local, state and federal). Ability to work in a senior management, fast-paced environment that is focused on sociocultural change. Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills. Detail-oriented and thoughtful attention to messaging and language. Comfort working with a diverse population with myriad backgrounds and experiences; must have awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of the youth that Covenant House Florida Serves



TRANSPORTATION:

Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.

Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. Ability to work standing, walking, and/or sitting a minimum of 8 hours per day/shift. Some weekend/holiday work may be required.  Ability to drive agency or personal vehicles to transport items and/or persons.

Ability to travel as needed for training or to fulfill job requirements.
