Position Summary

Commons Ground Coordinator

Reports to: Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship Librarian

Hours per week: 15-20

Pay per hour: $9.00

Location: Service Point on the Commons Ground level of Hege Academic Commons

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage the team of Commons Ground Assistants with the guidance of the Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship Librarian

  • Manage outreach to first- and second-year students, which may include class presentations, individual or small group consultations, the development of advertising materials, and other projects as assigned 

  • Help patrons with 3D printing, laser engraving, screenprinting, virtual reality (VR), and other Commons Ground Makerspace tools/equipment

  • Provide tours and answer questions about the Makerspace and its equipment

  • Encourage safe and responsible use of equipment by enforcing rules and policies

  • Maintain a clean, organized space throughout the Commons Ground; this includes managing inventory and ensuring that equipment checkout protocols are followed

  • Ensure that all protocols are followed regarding tool upkeep and inventory

  • Support special projects and events (e.g., workshops, classes, etc.)

  • Contribute to a friendly and inclusive environment where all patrons feel welcome


 

Preferred experience, skills, and competencies

  • Strong management skills, including time, project, and people management

  • Strong customer service and written/verbal communication skills

  • Ability to communicate in a calm and professional manner

  • Ability to problem solve and learn new hardware and software quickly

  • Experience with both Windows and Mac operating systems

  • Experience with 3D printers and their maintenance is preferred

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or their equivalents

  • Prompt, dependable, reliable, and detail-oriented

  • Ability to lead a team in a fast-paced environment

  • May have to lift up to 20lbs

  • Technical proficiency: Operate and troubleshoot 3D printers, laser cutters, screenprinters, VR headsets, and other tools while building practical knowledge of how they’re used in real-world applications

  • Communication and presentation skills: Communicate clearly with users and confidently lead tours or presentations for diverse audiences

  • Customer service and support: Help maintain a friendly, inclusive environment while providing helpful, solutions-focused assistance

  • Leadership and teamwork: Collaborate effectively with peers and take initiative in leading projects and mentoring team members

  • Time and task management: Balance multiple responsibilities while maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient workspace

  • Creativity and innovation: Turn ideas into physical prototypes through hands-on problem-solving and creative experimentation


 

Compensation

To be employed, you must be a current Guilford College student and you must be eligible for Federal Work-Study. Hourly wage may increase on an annual basis with continued employment.
