Position Summary
The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and maintaining Steel Service Corporation’s safety and health programs in alignment with OSHA standards, AISC certifications, DOT/FMCSA compliance, and biblical principles of stewardship and care. This role serves as a resource and advocate for employees in all departments, ensuring safe work practices, proactive risk mitigation, and a culture of accountability and respect.

Essential Functions Statement(s)
- Support the development and continuous improvement of safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Assist in conducting Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safety Risk Assessments, and PPE evaluations.
- Maintain and audit SDS files, training records, inspection logs, and incident reports.
- Coordinate annual hearing conservation, respiratory fit tests, and other medical surveillance as required.
- Deliver safety orientation for new hires and refresher training for existing employees.
- Facilitate toolbox talks, safety huddles, and emergency response drills.
- Conduct routine field, shop, and site inspections to enforce safety compliance.
- Ensure regulatory postings, permits, and required signage are up-to-date and compliant.
- Respond to and investigate injuries, near-misses, property damage, and vehicle incidents.
- Coordinate post-accident testing, reporting, and root cause analysis.
- Prepare OSHA 300 logs, first reports of injury, and assist with workers’ compensation claims in collaboration with HR.

- Model a servant-leadership approach to safety: coaching employees rather than policing.
- Communicate safety expectations clearly and respectfully across departments.
- Promote behavioral safety, peer accountability, and employee feedback loops.
Requirements:
2+ years of experience in industrial, manufacturing, construction, or transportation safety
Working knowledge of OSHA 1910/1926, DOT/FMCSA, and hazard communication standards
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital safety platforms (e.g., iAuditor, Site Docs)
Associate or bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, or related field
Safety certifications such as OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, HAZWOPER, or CHS.
Familiarity with AISC Quality Certification requirements and fabrication processes
