ADEC is a non-profit who serves individuals with disabilities in Elkhart and Saint Joseph counties. ADEC's mission is to empower people with disabilities to live fulfilled lives in their communities. 

ADEC has a great opportunity for anyone with previous Barista experience to serve as Lead Barista at ADEC’s Gaining Grounds Coffee House. Gaining Grounds is not just a coffee shop. It is a social enterprise developing opportunities for people with disabilities to train as Baristas through our internship program. Plus, we display and sell one-of-a-kind artwork created by people served at ADEC. Gaining Grounds serves a variety of hot/cold coffee, specialty drinks as well as pre-prepared food. Hours are mostly Monday – Friday from 6:30am – 3pm.

Essential Functions:

  1. Greet customers and provide excellent customer service sharing ADEC’s mission and opportunities for people with disabilities to live and work in their community. 
  2. Responsible for purchasing food, coffee, and other supplies necessary for daily coffee shop operations. 
  3. Serve as internship lead, helping train interns, follow the internship guidelines, and communicate with Employment Services with updates and necessary communication. 
  4. Operate coffee brewer and other related equipment, including expresso machine. Serve pre-prepared food. 
  5. Operate cash register and count change accurately.
  6. Maintain clean and organized workspace in the coffee shop, seated areas, and conference rooms to optimize operations. 
  7. Manage inventory and product levels by refilling, stocking and preparing fresh coffee and specialty products daily. 
  8. Demonstrate a willingness to acquire working knowledge of the Art by ADEC inventory system as it relates to SKU assignment, pricing, location determination and data entry in to the Square.
  9. Help develop new educational and growth opportunities with the community to expand customer choices and meet customer needs. 
  10. Assist in the planning and implementation of community and agency events. 
  11. Close register at days end.  Count money and make daily deposits without errors.
  12. Wash dishes, wash windows, sweep floors regularly throughout the shift to keep coffee shop clean. 
  13. Mentoring team members to ensure consistency and quality of coffee preparation, professionalism, patron service, hygiene & cleanliness.

Job Requirements:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent is preferred. 
  2. Customer service experience required. 
  3. Previous experience working as a Barista strongly preferred. 
  4. Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills needed. 
  5. Must be able to work independently. Will need to take initiative to solve customer concerns and keep the daily operation of the coffee shop and retail area efficient. 
  6. Must demonstrate a commitment to ADEC’s mission and the ability to develop strong working relationships with employees across ADEC — from direct support professionals to vice presidents — as well as the people ADEC serves.
  7. ServSafe certification, or willingness to obtain with ADEC’s assistance.
  8. Successful completion of required training as indicated by Human Resources and supervisor to meet regulatory, credentialing and accreditation requirements. 
  9. May require working weekends and some evenings for special events.
  10. Working knowledge and comfortability with the Square POS and Microsoft Office required.
