About the Department

The Facilities Maintenance Technician is a non-exempt position under direct supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Superintendent.   The Facilities Maintenance Technician receives training to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties and tasks supporting the Public Works Facilities Maintenance division. Duties and tasks include basic plumbing repairs, painting, basic electrical work, basic carpentry, basic HVAC, and general facilities maintenance. 

This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs general servicing, installation, repair, and maintenance on components, structures, fixtures, roofing systems, facilities, and equipment to include but not limited to sanitary systems, electrical systems, flooring, hot and cold-water supply, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems
  • Performs rough and finish carpentry work
  • Performs concrete and masonry work
  • Installs and repairs architectural finish (e.g., wall and flooring) systems including drywall, tile, laminate, vinyl, carpet, wood, concrete, and other materials 
  • Installs and maintains various other building systems including suspended ceilings, door access systems, fixtures, appliances, lighting; and performs monthly testing of emergency exit lighting systems 
  • Assists with backflow testing and repair for all city-owned domestic backflow devices
  • Assists with performing monthly testing of Phase 1 and 2 fire services and quarterly testing of emergency two-way communication on all city-owned elevator conveyances
  • Assists with performing monthly testing of emergency exit lighting systems

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
  • May perform duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade as required
  • May work with irate citizens and employees in stressful situations
  • Will be required to enter data into a computer using Microsoft Office products or similar programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to: Proper lifting of up to 50 pounds is an essential function of this position, will occasionally lift loads of 75 lbs or more as required
  • Considerable walking and standing, as well as other activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, kneeling, leaning, sitting, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Frequent hand/foot/eye coordination for operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Far and near visual acuity to read manuals, record data, monitor/observe instruments, and gauges, and to safely operate equipment and adequately perform maintenance operations
  • Ability to hear verbal instructions and warning signals
  • Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes in pursuit of outside maintenance

Minimum Qualifications

The Facilities Maintenance Technician shall possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic hand tools, gauges, and specialized equipment to perform repairs on plumbing systems, electrical systems, or HVAC equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot plumbing and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Skill to operate a computer using Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public, and other agencies
  • Ability to perform all job duties in a safe manner

Other Qualifications

In addition to the knowledge skill, and abilities listed above, this position requires the following: 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of verifiable experience in commercial facilities maintenance/repairs. 
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment
    1. License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification 
    2. During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position involves indoor and outdoor work with exposure to all weather conditions, noise, fumes, dust, heights, and chemicals. The work may also be performed in confined spaces, around water, electrical currents, and other hazardous conditions. Must be willing to work on an on-call basis and be prepared to work in emergency situations.

All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment.  Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination.  The incumbent will be required to comply with future changes in State statute regarding licensure, training, and registration.  

Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information.  This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria
