ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Collection Management department works closely with library branches and departments in order to provide relevant and timely service. We build digital and physical collections by focusing on high quality and relevant selections that reflect the interests and diversity of our community. We provide easy access to these collections to meet the needs of our community.
A RESOURCE FOR ALL
Home Service Selector selects and coordinates the delivery of library materials to HRM residents who are unable to visit one of Halifax Public Libraries' branches on account of their proximity to a branch, or due to disability, long-term illness, or caregiver responsibilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Home Services Lead, as the Home Services Selector, you will:
- Register clients for home delivery service and borrow-by-mail service and prepare information packets and library cards.
- Develop, input, maintain, and update reading interest profiles.
- Answer customer inquiries
- Provide information and readers’ advisory services, using print and electronic sources.
- Select materials in alignment with reading interest profiles or in response to specific requests from clients.
- Assist customers in the use of the library catalogue, and the library's electronic resources, including accessible format platforms such as CELA and NNELS.
- Explain library policies and address minor complaints.
- Alert clients to overdue or lost materials.
- Check in, check out and renew materials and place holds as requested.
- Assist with supervision of volunteer selector.
- Determine workflow priorities for the immediate shift and make recommendations for future shifts.
- Assist in training of staff and provide practical instruction and support.
- Pack/unpack library materials, search shelves and retrieve items.
- Process Borrow Anywhere Return Anywhere (BARA) materials, update records, and record statistics.
- Accept payments, and issue refunds.
Education & Experience:
- Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent & three (3) years of related experience
Required:
- Read and write English
- Ability to sort in alphabetic and numeric order
- Basic computer knowledge and skills including:
- Functions of a web browser and the internet
- Email applications
- Windows, and Office software applications
- Intermediate technology skills including:
- Willingness to learn and experiment with additional processes, tools and technologies
- Willingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts
- Ability to lift, pull, and push objects up to 35 lbs
- Knowledge of information and readers’ services work.
- Experience working with diverse communities including economically, culturally and socially diverse individuals.
- Experience working with seniors and/or persons with disabilities.
- Familiarity with an automated library systems.
- Frequent variety of sitting, standing and moving (i.e., pushing, reaching, crouching)
- Frequent moderate exertion of moving and/or transporting of objects up to 35 lbs.
- Frequent manual dexterity required for use of basic office equipment (i.e. computers)
- Repetitive motion of material handling
- Focus and attention to details
- Frequent need for recognizing small print
