ABOUT THE BRANCH
Woodlawn Public Library is a large suburban branch that offers a wide variety of diverse programs and services to the customers of all ages. It is located next to many retail outlets, and also a lake trail, so is in the hub of the community. A former movie theatre, it features high ceilings and one remaining program room that is still a popular spot for movies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As Service Support at Halifax Public Libraries, you will be:
Working with Public Service:
- Answer basic customer questions and routine customer account inquiries, in person and on the telephone and refer to appropriate staff as needed
- Set up and assist with programs/meetings in the library and at community sites
- Ensure audience safety, comfort and appropriate behavior at programs
- Check in materials (By sorting, lifting, packing, unpacking bins and routing materials and mail)
- Process holds and returns for circulation, collections and redistribution
- Shelve and move library materials while maintaining proper order
- Clean and organization for the branch/department and maintain equipment to ensure a safe environment for staff and patrons
- Record and compile statistics
- Assist with promotion and display of materials, programs and services
- Provide collection maintenance support:
- Sort, process, repair or discard library materials
- Resolve problem items (e.g. mismatches, missing pieces)
- Using guidelines and procedures, enters and edits information in the library database (ILS)
- Display, promote, and perform work duties in a positive and safe way and display safety awareness at all times.
- Support and show leadership by working to health and safety standards, following health and safety policies and procedures and encouraging colleagues to work to the same standards by reporting incidents, hazardous conditions and improvement possibilities.
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Education & Experience:
Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent & one (1) year of related experience
(Related experience can come from a number of sources. (i.e., volunteer work, community work, customer service, hospitality, or retail experience.)
Requirements:
- Read and write English
- Sort in alphabetic and numeric order
- Basic computer knowledge and skills including:
- Functions of a web browser
- Email applications
- Willingness to learn additional tools and technologies
- Ability to lift, pull, and push objects up to 35 lbs
- Fluency in a second language
- Repetitive motions including reaching, gripping, crouching/kneeling to handle materials
- Frequent moderate exertion including: standing, walking, lifting, pulling, and pushing of objects up to 35 lbs on a daily basis
- Focus and attention to detail
- Frequent need for recognizing small print
- Frequent manual dexterity required for use of basic office equipment
