About the Department

About the position:
The Office of Financial Management (OFM) is housed within State Budget Office and is responsible for the State of Michigan’s accounting functions and related systems. OFM staff perform central accounting and payroll control activities, develop and issue statewide accounting policies, and monitor compliance by agencies with state accounting policies. The role of an accountant is to address accounting, budgetary and financial reporting matters.
As an Accountant with OFM, you will:
- Assist in the preparation of the State’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
- Complete assigned Statewide reporting activities.
- Solve basic accounting problems utilizing knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Assist in the development and control of the State’s accounting system account structure for assigned subject matter areas.
- At the experienced level, provide instruction and assistance for departments related to assigned subject matter areas.

Office location is Lansing, MI, however, The Office of Financial Management currently offers a hybrid work option (combination of remote/office) which requires one day working on-site at the official workstation with the potential of up to four days remote work per week. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview. Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of these positions. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.

Position Duties
Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in accounting.
Experience
Accountant 9
No specific type or amount is required.
Accountant 10
One year of professional experience performing or auditing the systematic classification and evaluation of accounting data and the preparation of related financial and managerial reports equivalent to an Accountant 9 or Auditor 9.
Accountant P11
Two years of professional experience performing or auditing the systematic classification and evaluation of accounting data and the preparation of related financial and managerial reports, including one year equivalent to an Accountant 10, Auditor 10, or Assistant Auditor General 10.
Accountant 12
Three years of professional experience performing or auditing the systematic classification and evaluation of accounting data and the preparation of related financial and managerial reports, including one year equivalent to an Accountant P11, Auditor P11, or Assistant Auditor General P11.
Accounting Specialist 13
Four years of professional experience performing or auditing the systematic classification and evaluation of accounting data and the preparation of related financial and managerial reports equivalent to an Accountant, Auditor, or Assistant Auditor General including two years equivalent to an Accountant P11, Auditor P11, or Assistant Auditor General P11 or one year equivalent to an Accountant 12, Auditor 12, or Assistant Auditor General 12.Note: Experience is considered professional if the job required a bachelor's degree.
The "Salary" listed is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the position. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a Certified Public Accountant certification (CPA) may be substituted for one year of Accountant P11 experience.
Possession of a Certified Management Accountant certification (CMA) may be substituted for six months of Accountant P11 experience.
