Job Description

Montgomery College has an immediate need for a full-time Placement and Learning Advisor for the East County Education Center.  The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. This is a non-bargaining, exempt, grade 27 position.  Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, belonging, and inclusiveness. This position is eligible for telework one day a week. This eligibility is subject to change based on the needs of the unit.

The Placement and Learning Advisor assesses, tests, places, and counsels’ prospective students to determine proficiency levels for placement in appropriate courses, as well as advises and counsels students around learning goals, educational and career opportunities.

Contacts and interactions vary and may involve multiple constituencies, such as direct interaction with colleagues, managers, administrators, students, and faculty to provide information, guidance, and direction.

This is a temporary position with benefits currently funded by the Perkins Grant through June 30, 2026.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assists students with setting academic and career goals, planning future studies, and supporting their learning through counseling and conflict resolution, and tracks student outcomes.
  • Designs, develops, and implements placement, counseling, orientation, and other materials.
  • Advises and counsels students around learning goals and educational opportunities.
  • Assesses, counsels, and places students in appropriate courses according to proficiency level and needs.
  • Ensures students are eligible for programs based on applicable laws, College policies, and funder requirements.
  • Assists students with financial aid planning.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding the College as well as related programs.
  • Resolves student complaints, conflicts, and other concerns.
  • Works with staff from other units to facilitate the transition of non-credit students into credit coursework.
  • Supervises adjunct faculty during testing and counseling at the beginning of each semester.
  • Responds to instructor inquiries and supports instructors through course observation and consultation.
  • Collaborates with other administrators in setting program policies and procedures as well as revising curriculum (course goals, objectives, and content).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling or a related field.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Two to three years of progressively responsible experience working in higher education or a similar environment.
  • Two years of experience in academic advising, counseling, assessing, planning, designing and implementing adult learning strategies for diverse targeted groups or individuals.
  • Experience providing workshops or instruction.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, project management software, familiarity with computer hardware and peripheral devices.
  • Knowledge of the theories and methods of academic and/or career counseling.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management.
  • Knowledge of the College’s policies, mission, vision, and the role of the College within the community, the State of Maryland, and higher education.
  • Knowledge of workforce development programs, management, best practices and emerging trends.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Hiring Range: $65,910 - $85,671 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity.  The maximum salary for this position is $ 105,432.
