About the Role – Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)
As our Chief Marketing Officer, you will lead a multi-million-dollar marketing engine driving Puerto Rico’s tourism renaissance. You will oversee global brand strategy, PR, digital innovation, data-driven campaigns, and strategic partnerships while working with a powerhouse team that’s 82% Puerto Rican, 73% women, and 100% purpose-driven.
We seek a visionary — a brand builder, cultural translator, and strategic leader with experience in Puerto Rico and beyond. Someone who knows how to turn passion into performance, imagination into economic impact, and storytelling into long-term brand equity.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and implement annual marketing plans and detailed budgets, including strategies for branding and advertising. eCommerce initiatives, website/mobile development, public relations, media relations, publications, social media, special events, partnership initiatives, and program design.
• Fosters and maintains relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets and community partners to position Puerto Rico as an attractive visitor destination.
• Assists in the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan.
• Supervises the implementation of other marketing aspects, such as sales show attendance, travel agent sales, familiarization tours, etc.
• Plan and oversee the production of community sales materials that support the sales efforts of the Puerto Rico DMO members cost-effectively.
• Participate as a vital leadership team member in developing and implementing organizational policies, practices, and procedures and in the overall management and administration of the business.
• Maintain awareness of market opportunities, research and analyze current trends and climates that affect the industry, Interface with significant stakeholders, and plan dedicated and cooperative marketing strategies. Develop concepts, themes, and ideas for campaigns. Communicate strategies for stakeholders and other departments to ensure integration and collaborative efforts.
• Develop and execute marketing and business development strategies that maximize return on investment (measured by increased visitation and spending in international inbound travel to Puerto Rico).
• Negotiate and manage contracts with advertising, marketing, media agencies, international contractors, and other vendors. Negotiate large volume purchases for blocks of space or increments of service. Develop resale methodologies to enable partners to share in agency services at reduced prices.
• Participate in various meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and maintain specified knowledge of new developments, requirements, and policies.
• Other related duties that may be necessary or desirable to support Discover Puerto Rico’s success.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide strategic oversight and direction to the marketing, international public relations, and digital marketing departments, ensuring alignment with the organization’s goals and vision.
• Lead and supervise the activities of direct reports, conduct annual performance reviews, foster a motivating and collaborative work environment, and promote professional growth within the team.
• Actively participate in the leadership team, contributing to developing and implementing organizational policies, practices, and procedures while supporting overall management and administration.
• Evaluate employee performance, offering regular coaching and counseling to enhance productivity and effectiveness.
• As necessary, oversee personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, terminations, or disciplinary measures.
• Maintain a positive, legally compliant work environment by minimizing risks, ensuring adherence to labor laws, and promoting a culture of transparency and respect within the department.
KEY CREDENTIALS
• 10+ years of experience in Strategic Marketing Management, Project Management, Destination Marketing, and Communications (industry experience a plus).
• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, tourism, or equivalent experience; an MBA or post-graduate degree is strongly preferred.
• Proven executive-level marketing leadership in Travel and Tourism, with comprehensive experience in dynamic team leadership and success in tourism, digital marketing, and content.
• Expertise in leveraging trends and technology, creating digital strategies, and crafting engaging user experiences across digital and social media platforms.
• Ability to develop innovative strategies and partnerships, with a strong track record of conceptualizing and implementing projects.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build productive relationships internally and externally.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate across diverse disciplines and cultures.
• Experience with direct sales, marketing management, and executive administration, including handling budgets of $30M+ and leading agencies for creative/media plans.
• Consumer insights expertise, focusing on KPIs, ROI, and market trends to define strategies and drive results.
• Strong strategic planning, data analysis, and critical decision-making abilities.
• Experience with startups and building organizational cultures in times of change.
• Prior international travel promotions experience (Puerto Rico inbound experience preferred).
• Experience reporting to Boards of Directors and diverse stakeholders in the public/private sectors.
• Bilingual (English-Spanish preferred); MICE and lifestyle marketing experience optional.
This full-time position requires regular business travel, both locally, domestically, and internationally, as part of its strategic responsibilities.
