Primary Function: Responsible for the appropriate and accurate preparation of the patient for the physician visit from the point of sign-in until the completion of the visit; is the liaison between the patient, physician, and other AHP employees.

At times, the Medical Assistant functions as a resource person assisting the nursing staff with prescription refills, prior authorizations, completion of patient forms, and appropriately distributing received faxes from other health care organizations. 

At times, the Medical Assistant functions in the lab by administering vaccines, medications, treatments, and regimens as prescribed by the physician. Also, they may perform laboratory tests, determinations, and cultures according to the procedures prescribed by the manufacturers and the Laboratory Director.  

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adherence to current HIPAA regulations and federal/state laws for patient protected health information (PHI) and medical records; adherence to all AHP policies/procedures as they pertain to patient PHI and the medical history; maintain strict confidentiality of all patient information 
  • Participate in daily care team huddles to ensure appropriate and quality patient care 
  • Escort patient and family to the exam room from the waiting room 
  • Communicate with staff and physician regarding any scheduling problems or patient emergencies 
  • Obtain physical measurements and objective data including age, weight, temperature, and chief complaint and onset for ill visits; age, height, weight, and when age-appropriate, head circumference, vision screening, and hearing screening for well care exams 
  • Obtain and input vital signs (i.e., pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, etc.) and other important information into the patient’s electronic medical record 
  • Implement forms and report data in the medical record from the TB screening form, the lead screening form, asthma forms, patient history form, M-chat form, ASQ form, and any other forms pertinent to the visit 
  • Administer vaccines, medications, treatments, and regimens prescribed by the physician 
  • Perform laboratory tests, determinations, and cultures according to procedures prescribed by the manufacturers and the Laboratory Director 
  • Update and print immunization records and prepare all forms for physician signature 
  • Assist with minor procedures 
  • Clean and prepare exam room for next patient; stock exam room with any needed supplies; assist with keeping exam rooms neat and clean and reporting any needed repairs 
  • Clean and close exam rooms at the end of each shift 
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives as needed 
  • Complete necessary training on topics including, but not limited to, care coordination, patient self-management, population management, and health literacy 
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and clinical department meetings 

Principle Working Relationships 

  • Works closely with patients in preparation for visit and assists in making the visit a pleasant experience 
  • Consults with physicians and other AHP employees at the start of each shift and periodically throughout the day regarding patient status, patient flow, scheduling issues, and any problems or emergencies 
  • Works with other employees as needed 

Qualifications: 

  • Education: Holds certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA)
  • Is required to be trained and fulfill duties in aiding, resource, and the lab

Working Conditions: 

  • Works in clinical areas as well as throughout the facility
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during work hours

Start and end times are variable depending on your location and the physician an team member is working with. Our preferred candidate will work 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM on a part-time basis or on weekdays from 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM. We are open 365 days per year, so the position will be on a weekend and holiday rotation. A candidate can anticipate working a Saturday or Sunday shift once per month. Saturdays and Sundays are primarily for treating ill patients, so the end time is variable based on patient care needs.
