Position Summary:
The Executive Director is the key management leader of the HSVC. The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization, including fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The ED is the dynamic liaison between the Board of Directors (BOD), Shelter Staff and the community. The position reports directly to the Board President.
Essential Job Functions:
- Works with BOD to fulfill the organization’s mission.
- Leads the HSVC in a manner that is consistent with the organization’s mission and strategic plan as defined by the BOD.
- Communicates effectively with the BOD and provides all information necessary for the BOD to make informed decisions in a timely and accurate manner.
- Serves as spokesperson for the organization.
- Fosters beneficial relationships with customers, businesses, donors, and foundations.
- With the Development Director, helps in developing and overseeing the shelter’s fundraising programs, including an annual capital campaign.
- Establishes and maintains community contacts with government agencies, civic groups, animal rights groups, other animal-focused groups, and interacts effectively with the public.
Operations Accountabilities:
- Engages and communicates effectively with all departments including animal care, adoption services, clinic services, humane investigations, emergency & disaster services, Pet Food Pantry, and Pet-Assisted Therapy.
- Leads, coaches, develops, and retains Directors. Meet regularly with Directors to review procedures, policies, and operating strategies. Proactively address any issues and involve BOD when necessary.
- Works with the Finance Director to ensure the organization is run in line with annual budget and addresses significant deviations with the board in a timely manner.
- Stays informed of current animal welfare issues as well as the changing needs of the community.
Human Resource Accountabilities:
- Ensures the development and implementation of employee training programs and other professional development opportunities for all staff.
- Encourages and develops a strong working environment built on dignity and respect for all employees to attract and retain reliable, valuable staff.
- Assists Director of Shelter Operations with performance evaluations of staff in supervisory positions.
- Ensures that all policies, plans, and programs are regularly reviewed and modified as needed.
Requirements
Job Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of nonprofit management experience at a senior or executive level.
- 3+ years staff supervision experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education in animal welfare, nonprofit, education, business, or finance (preferred).
- Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) preferred.
- Proven success in fundraising and stakeholder relations.
- Experience working in or volunteering at an animal welfare organization (preferred).
- Basic knowledge of grant writing and best practices in fundraising required with proven success in fundraising activities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nonprofit management, leadership principles, decision-making techniques, and human resource management.
- Budget and financial competence (preferred).
- Strong mediation skills with the ability to promote cooperation among individuals and groups.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of legal liabilities and responsibilities of those concerned with the enforcement of regulations, ordinances, and laws as it relates to companion animal care and adoption issues along with a working knowledge of animal rights issues.
- Working knowledge of Chameleon, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, and Excel.
- Work effectively under pressure and able to work on a variety of tasks at the same time across multiple groups of people.
- Knowledge of and skill in the safe handling and care of animals with a genuine compassion for domestic animals and wildlife.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations such as wildfires and flooding that may require providing safe harbor to animals in the county.
Physical Demands:
- Irregular hours, including evenings and weekend meetings, odd hour emergency callouts, and community commitments are a normal part of the job.
- Proximity to animals, their noises, odors, dander, waste, and other impacts are to be expected.
- Prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, walking.
- Must be able to traverse irregular terrain.
- May work outside in varying temperatures.
- May work inside in temperature-controlled environment.
- May be called upon to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
