General Summary: Provide support to classroom teachers and the educational community in the delivery of a broad range of duties leading to effective student learning, classroom management, and instruction.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the lead teacher, the assistant teacher will:

  • Engage young children to explore, discover, construct, represent, and convey new knowledge.
  • Lead small group projects in which children co-construct knowledge.
  • Organize spaces to spark ideas allowing children to explore, discover, and represent new learning in many ways.
  • Collaborate with lead teacher and team to build a strong learning community in which children thrive. 
  • Help maintain a classroom environment that is carefully created with natural, recycled, and open-ended materials that invite creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and self-expression. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with each child. 
  • Increase the social, emotional, and academic growth of all children by creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the children. 
  • Work with the lead teacher to plan instruction consistent with the School’s approved curriculum for Preschool.
  • Assist lead teacher with appropriate formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and assess learning. 
  • Provide lead teacher with regular feedback for parent communication, reports, and conferences. 
  • Use technology to document learning through photographs, dictation, and work samples. 
  • Assist lead teacher with daily clean-up and preparation for activities and projects.
  • Relay job duties to substitute teachers upon absences.
  • Maintain and develop outdoor environment, recycling room, and supply room.
  • Complete other tasks as deemed appropriate by the lead teacher, Preschool & Lower School Administration.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:                                         

  • A passion for early childhood education and understanding of the needs of young children. 
  • Strong content knowledge in early childhood elementary education, including best teaching practices. 
  • Ability and desire to work with young children
  • Ability to interpret data in order to improve student learning
  • Strong classroom management skills with the ability and desire to work with a diverse student body
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and maintain positive professional relationships
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong degree of self- direction and motivation
  • High level of maturity, confidentiality, and assertiveness
  • Capable of competently operating technology
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to work outside of the normal school day hours when necessary. 
  • Flexibility and patience
  • Ability to assist and engage in synchronous and asynchronous learning

 Education and Experience:

  • Experience in an early childhood classroom setting 
  • Knowledge of Reggio Emilia Approach in a classroom setting 
  • Pedagogical understanding of emergent curriculum and constructivist education for children ages 2-6 in a classroom setting 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education and/or Early Childhood preferred
WI DPI License 777 preferred

8 am to 12 noon, Monday to Friday.
