The Champaign County Coroner’s Office is accepting applications for the position of Deputy Coroner (Full-time).
The Deputy Coroner works directly with the coroner, the forensic pathologist, and other staff during death investigations and autopsies. This position requires the ability to perform comprehensive death investigations which includes interacting with deceased human remains by performing external examinations, documenting and collecting evidence, and identifications. Additional duties include writing detailed investigation reports, reviewing patient medical records, interacting and communicating with medical personnel, law enforcement, and families, maintaining the cleanliness of the morgue and storage facility, and performing other duties as assigned. Preferred candidates shall have excellent attention to detail and a minimum two years during the past five years verifiable background/experience and/or training/education in one or more of the following disciplines:
-Anatomy/Physiology -Criminal Justice/Forensics -EMS/Fire/Law Enforcement -Funeral Directing -Patient Care
* Knowledge and understanding of general medical terminology is preferred. In addition to excellent attention to detail, applicants must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, experience using Microsoft Office Software, and ability to work varying day and on-call shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Candidates must be able to type accurately at 50 WPM.
All applicants selected to proceed further in the application process will be required to attend an in person mandatory orientation meeting scheduled at a later date. During this orientation, a minimum skills assessment test will be administered to applicants to assess baseline forensic death investigation knowledge.
Applicants must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License with a clear driving record. All applicants must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire, pass a complete state and national criminal background check, and a post-employment offer physical fitness test as a condition of employment.
This position is a full-time position with including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Salary range for this position is Grade G, minimum salary $21.50/hour, maximum salary $31.81/hour.
Applicants should note this is a Bargaining Unit position under the Agreement set by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Union contract.
