JOB TITLE: ESL Teacher Assistant
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
To assist the teacher in the instruction of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students in the regular classroom setting to improve academic success and English language acquisition.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Supports the classroom environment in a manner that helps LEP students to succeed.
- Plans and prepares for the instructional activities with the classroom teacher.
- Works with small groups of LEP students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists with individual LEP students in need of special attention.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
- Provides personalized support through the interpretation of important terminology and concepts so that LEP students have increased access to content.
- Provides support to classroom teachers in meeting the needs of LEP students at different levels of English language proficiency.
- Provides scaffolding supports to assist LEP students in learning the state curriculum as they develop language skills.
- Attends meetings of the school as directed.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.
- Strives to be a positive example for students in attitude, actions, speech, and dress.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may be assigned by the classroom teacher or school administrator.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Assistants must hold one of the following qualifications:
- A 2-year degree;
- A minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework; or
- A WorkKeys assessment in reading, writing, and math with a bronze passing score (Level 3).
