POSITION TITLE: Staff Accountant
Department: Finance
Reports to: CFO
Date: 07/2023
Mission of Department:
To provide efficient customer service to our customers and associates through accurate accounting. Support and promote the mission of Scott County Hospital.
Purpose of Position:
Supports CFO in carrying out the responsibilities of the department. Creating and maintaining ledgers and financial analysis reports on selected hospital functions accurately and efficiently. Assisting in preparation of monthly financial reports and special projects.
Essential Functions:
- Completes work in a timely and accurate manner.
- Follows the Accounting Department’s compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Assist in monitoring the hospital’s financial system; investigates any problems that arise and collaborates to find solution.
- Prepares assigned reports, monthly and annually, for all Board meetings.
- Working knowledge of billing, collections and insurance claims, third party payers and private insurance.
- Reconciles without unknown variances monthly the bank accounts and general ledger balance sheet accounts timely.
- Manage hospital statistical information.
- Has the basic knowledge of tax reports to assist with 1099 production, mailing and IRS reporting submissions.
- Prepares and submits the monthly State of Kansas Sales Tax report and initiates the payment of such.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Attends continuing education classes as needed.
- Assist CFO with monthly journal entry preparation and other items.
- Performs such other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be required: such as helping with year-end accounting duties, including but not limited to, budget, cost report, audit and the DSH Survey.
- Manages and maintains petty cash fund, including semi-annual audit of each petty cash drawer.

Requirements
Education, Qualifications, Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred, preferably in Accounting or Business Administration with emphasis in accounting.
- A minimum of two years of experience in accounting, preferably in a hospital setting.
Personal Characteristics:
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and CMS regulations.
- Possess excellent work habits and willingness to work hour’s necessary to complete important deadlines.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Attends committee and required meetings, as appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Excellent computer knowledge.
- Highly skilled in Microsoft Office applications.
