About the Department

Planning Technician I

In this position, you will serve as the first point of contact for planning and zoning inquiries at the City of Colorado Springs. You’ll provide customer service to the public, assist in processing permits and development applications, and support the Planning and Development Department with data research, public notifications, and technical planning tasks. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong communication skills, organizational abilities, and a genuine interest in city planning and public service.

Work Location: City Administration Building, 30 S. Nevada, Colorado Springs, CO 80903
Job Type: Full-Time; Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, in-office presence is required.
Hourly Salary: $22.04 - $26.46 Hourly

As a Planning Technician I, you will:
  • Serve as a primary point of contact at the front counter for customer inquiries related to zoning, land use, and development.
  • Research land use history and zoning data using a variety of tools including GIS, archived records, and city databases.
  • Review and process minor land use applications, building permits, and sign permits.
  • Assist with the organization of project files, public meeting materials, and notifications.
  • Maintain and organize planning records and files, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and compliance with records retention policies.
  • Support senior planning staff by creating maps, charts, presentations, and compiling data for reports.
  • Respond to internal and external stakeholder inquiries in a courteous, professional, and solution-oriented manner.
  • Help maintain and update internal systems, websites, and databases.
  • Serve as a backup for senior planning technicians with public notifications and document preparation.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • An understanding of municipal processes and flexibility with shifting priorities
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn planning-related software and systems (such as GIS, Microsoft Office, and Cartegraph)

Position Duties

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of full-time, professional experience in customer service, or  a related field
