About the Department

Becoming the Maintenance Manager - Fleet and Facilities at the Lake County Division of Transportation will allow you to perform moderately complex work related to managing the Lake County owned fleet and the operations of the facilities at the Division of Transportation (DOT). The work is performed under the direction of the Maintenance Engineer, but the Maintenance Manager - Fleet and Facilities has considerable latitude for making independent judgments and decisions within the established highway department policies.

Hours of Work:

  • Monday through Friday, from 6:30am - 3:00pm.

  • Limited remote work opportunities available.


Position Duties

  •  Research, develop, and implement the long-range fleet capital plans, programs, and new technologies in support of the strategic goals of the County Board, which includes conducting research and making recommendations to reduce the overall fleet carbon footprint
  • Develop the long range DOT facility capital plan and works with other county departments to coordinate work and secure related project funds
  • Manage the vehicle maintenance program, fleet mechanics, and facilities staff
  • Analyzing data and providing fleet information on vehicle and equipment needs and acquisitions to individual departments as well as the County Administrator's Office
  • Develops shop work procedures for maintaining County equipment, review shop operations, parts acquisition, technician training, maintenance software updates, equipment standards, work schedules, and employee performance
  • Prepare annual budget submissions, develop annual replacement vehicle lists including vehicle specifications, biding documents, and preparing vehicles and equipment for disposal
  • Review and approve credit card transactions for purchases made by your Parts and Facilities team members
  • Preparing fleet activity reports for department billings and county benchmarking, preparing specifications and documents for building maintenance, repair, and reconstruction for the various DOT structures, analyzing and purchasing new shop equipment, and ensuring all snow and ice control equipment, vehicles, and facilities are ready prior to each year's snow season

Minimum Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of vehicle maintenance programs, fleet mechanics, equipment, facility maintenance programs and procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of safety principles and practice, budgeting processes, the use of personal computer systems, and the application of contemporary management techniques and principles for employee involvement and continuous improvement
  • Working knowledge of sound building construction practices and building automation systems and road maintenance practices for maintaining equipment
  • Can work well both individually and as a member of a team
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Knowledge of some or all of the following software: Fleet Management, Vehicle Telematics, Building Automation, Facility Assessment, Microsoft Suite preferred.

Education and Other Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, or education and training equivalent to four years of college education in business, liberal arts, or any field other than engineering or the hard sciences
  • APWA Public Fleet Management Certificate, Certified Fleet Professional (CPFP), or NAFA Certified Fleet Manager designation a plus
  • Requires ten years of related experience with at least eight years of responsible supervisory experience in fleet and/or facilities management
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License supplemented by a satisfactory driving record

Physical Requirements:

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy
