Schedule: Monday-Friday | 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Location: Elementary schools in Knox County
Are you looking for a meaningful, part-time job where you can have fun, make an impact, and support kids in your community? Join the Penobscot Bay YMCA as part of our Afterschool Team!
We’re hiring Afterschool Staff to help create a safe, active, and enriching space for children after school. This is a great opportunity for high school students (age 16+), college students, or anyone passionate about working with youth.
What You’ll Do:
- Create a safe and welcoming environment for all kids
- Lead activities like games, arts & crafts, STEM projects, and more
- Build positive relationships with kids, families, and your team
- Support daily routines, cleanup, and basic safety procedures
- Assist with Vacation Camp and Snow Camp when regular programs aren’t in session
What We're Looking For:
- A friendly, responsible attitude and a love for working with kids
- At least 16 years of age
- Experience working with children (preferred but not required)
- Willingness to obtain CPR, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention training (we’ll provide it)

Requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide an emotionally and physically safe environment for all participants.
- Help to develop and implement a high quality After School Program that incorporates both physical activity and enrichment activities. Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
- Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and staff.
- Complies with all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards. Cares for facilities and equipment ensuring materials and furniture are neatly put away at the end of each day.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings.
- Assists with Vacation Camp and Snow Camp programs when the Afterschool Program is not in session.
- Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 16 years of age (The age minimum may be higher depending on state law and YMCA policies.)
- Previous experience working with children preferred
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training (We will provide).

- Physically perform all skills required of Afterschool Program Staff
- Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
- Control unsafe behavior as necessary.
- Lifting up to 40 pounds multiple times each day.
- Frequent twisting, bending and kneeling.
- Exposure to the outdoor environment during all seasons.
- Be able to see and hear well enough to respond to classroom needs.
