Schedule: Monday–Friday | 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM

Location: Penobscot Bay YMCA @ Ash Point

The Penobscot Bay YMCA is hiring an Afterschool Coordinator to lead one of our dynamic afterschool programs. This is more than just a part-time job—it’s a chance to make a real difference every single day.


What You’ll Do:

  • Lead a vibrant after-school site and foster a welcoming environment for children and their families.
  • Design exciting weekly activities including STEM projects, creative arts, and physical movement.
  • Coordinate staff schedules, mentor your team, and make sure every day runs smoothly and safely.
  • Connect with families through weekly communication and ongoing relationship-building.
  • Keep programs organized, compliant, and in line with YMCA and DHHS regulations.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children in an afterschool or school setting preferred.
  • Completion of CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training. (We will provide this training)
  • Demonstrated level of maturity to handle the responsibilities involved in maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for all participants.
  • Ability to evaluate and monitor afterschool programs, solve problems and make sound judgments/decisions.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Works daily in the after-school program at the designated program site.
  2. Leads staff at the program site to ensure safety and high-quality programming, which includes daily physical activity and a healthy snack each day.
  3. Coordinate after-school staff schedules for the site, and plan a monthly curriculum that should include daily STEM or art enrichment activities. A STEM activity should be planned at least two per week.
  4. Manage all communication with parents, including a weekly parent email or newsletter. A STEM activity should be planned at least two per week.
  5. Ensure roster for the program is up to date and accurate daily attendance sheets are kept.
  6. Ensure incident and occurrence forms are filled out and consistently signed by parents.
  7. Ensure late slips are given to parents that are late more than once.
  8. Ensure all Afterschool sites consistently meet all necessary state licensing requirements.
  9. Assures compliance with YMCA, and DHHS regulations as they relate to childcare. Ensures that YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
  10. Trains, schedules and directs part-time afterschool staff and volunteers as needed.
  11. Provides for upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment.
  12. Manage program to meet the budget.
  13. Participate in monthly staff meetings and relevant training as required by the YMCA, DHHS.
  14. Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.

  • Physically perform all skills required of an Afterschool Coordinator
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  • Control unsafe behavior as necessary.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds multiple times each day.
  • Frequent twisting, bending and kneeling.
  • Exposure to the outdoor environment during all seasons.
  • Be able to see and hear well enough to respond to classroom needs.
