Primary Purpose
Provides temporary and emergency care of sick and injured students, dispense medication according to district policy, and maintain health records under the direction of the supervising nurse. Assist school nurse in maintaining the health and safety of students, facility and staff.
Qualifications Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate
- Registered LVN with current Texas license
- CPR/AED certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of First Aid Skills and safe medication administration
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to established district policy and procedures, within the LVN scope of practice. Call the District Health Coordinator in all matters of non-routine nature.
- Serve as health advocate for students.
- Notify parents of accident or illness as appropriate.
- Secure immediate medical care for students in emergency cases.
- Utilize a safe, organized system to administer medication to students at school. Administer medications according to District policy and procedures.
- Maintain current certifications for state mandated screenings, forwarding new certifications and renewals to the Health Services Coordinator when obtained. Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency and District policy. Send referrals to parents as outlined in the screening program. Forward completed reports to the District Health Coordinator as requested.
- Participate in the implementation of the campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
- Provide basic health instruction on an individual basis to student, staff and parent according to district policy and procedures.
- Serve as liaison between the school, physicians, parents, and community.
- Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documents pertaining to the student. Keep records current. Bring to the attention of the District Health Coordinator the need for care plans of students with special health problems. Alert the Coordinator of any ARD meetings as they are scheduled.
- Maintain accurate immunization records on all students enrolled on you campus, ensuring compliance with state immunization laws.
- Communicate regularly with the principal and health coordinator regarding health services issues.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
- Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal and health coordinator.
- Comply with all District and Campus policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Equipment Use
- Computer, telephone, facsimile machine, health related equipment – BP monitor, otoscope, peak flow monitor, nebulizer, oxygen, suction machine, gastric feeding tube, glucometer, vision and hearing equipment, and ambu bag.
Working Conditions Mental Demands
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress, communicate effectively with students, parents and staff.
Physical Demands
Standing, lifting and transfer of students, biological exposure to blood borne pathogens and other communicable diseases. Meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff.
