Summary/Objectives:
The Centralized Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, analyzing, and underwriting consumer loan applications submitted through various channels (e.g., online, branch, in person) working with customers to develop, expand and maintain positive lending relationships by making it fast and simple to get a loan with us. By providing prompt, efficient and accurate support to customers and co-workers from the application stage through the funding process. This role involves assessing applicant creditworthiness, financial capacity, collateral, and adherence to established lending policies and regulatory guidelines. The Underwriter will make sound credit decisions, communicate effectively with loan officers and other stakeholders, and contribute to the overall efficiency and quality of the consumer lending process.
Essential Functions
- Review and analyze consumer loan applications, including but not limited to, personal loans, auto loans, recreational vehicle loans, and other unsecured or secured consumer credit products.
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of all application information and supporting documentation (e.g., income verification, credit reports, and asset statements).
- Assess credit reports, payment history, debt-to-income ratios, and other relevant financial data to determine an applicant's ability and willingness to repay.
- Make informed credit decisions based on comprehensive analysis, adhering to the organization's credit policies, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ECOA, TILA).
- Approve, counter-offer, or deny loan applications, providing clear and concise explanations for decisions.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with loan applications.
- Structure loan terms and conditions in accordance with policy and risk parameters.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with loan officers, branch personnel, and other internal departments regarding loan decisions, conditions, and application status.
- Collaborate with sales and operations teams to optimize loan processing and customer experience.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of all underwriting decisions, analyses, and communications.
- Ensure all necessary disclosures and adverse action notices are properly generated and delivered.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED.
- One year of work experience in a lending capacity.
- Six months of work experience in customer service capacity.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational and decision-making skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Outlook, Word and Excel programs.
- Ability to multi-task, maintain a high degree of accuracy under pressure, ability to prioritize and manage work flow.
- Adaptable to an ever changing internal and external environment.
