Position Summary
The Counsellor Chair works in consultation with the Associate Director, and other members of Student Services, faculty and staff, to ensure service excellence and learner success within the context of Bow Valley College Strategic Plan.
The role will provide general oversight for counselling service quality within a coordinated care model of mental health services in Student Services. The Counsellor Chair helps to ensure effective communication and coordination of mental health services and other activities of Student Services and with other departments/schools, as well as with external bodies as relevant. The Counsellor Chair provides operational and mental health leadership support to counsellors and students.
Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Promotes a positive team environment.
- Provides service consultation, mentoring, and/or coaching and supports counsellors as needed and motivates team to actively support and achieve department goals.
- Chairs regular team meetings to maintain appropriate communication flow regarding learner issues, service delivery, procedures, policies and programming; ensuring they are understood and carried out.
- Provides orientation to the coordinated care model, mental health strategy and associated evaluation and reporting for counsellors.
- Guides coordinated care service collaboration within the team and the college.
- Provides input to the Associate Director to ensure effective counsellor recruitment.
- In collaboration with the Associate Director, responsible for fostering a coordinated care model that meets the needs of students and evaluating the success of programs and initiatives within the coordinated care model. This includes regular review of counsellor work schedules and case notes to ensure that service delivery standards are met, and proactively communicating any concerns or issues.
- Ensures the integrity, excellence and ongoing development of mental health supports, including mental health training, workshops, outreach, triage and counselling.
- Ensures that all metrics required for mental health strategic priorities and/or mental health funding is gathered and documented in a centralized and consistent manner.
- In collaboration with Associate Director, develops and conducts counselling service evaluation and provides feedback to assist in counsellor and/or service development.
- Develops counsellor schedules (including types of learner appointments, workshops and information sessions) within the context of College policy and department needs and recommends to the Associate Director for final approval.
- Assists in the development of informational/promotional materials regarding mental health supports in Student Services.
- Attends external counselling-specific meetings, including committees, as designated by the Associate Director.
- Collaborates with the Associate Director in formulating and implementing strategies to promote referral and access to counselling support in Student Services to learners, faculty and staff.
- Represents Student Services and the College to external stakeholders including government agencies, professional associations, and community groups as designated by the Associate Director.
- Develops and promotes College community support for diverse and/or vulnerable learners within a coordinated care model, e.g. peer supports, psycho-educational groups, etc.
- Counsels enrolled students on matters that interfere or may interfere with their success at Bow Valley College including personal, family or relationship issues, academic/learning difficulties, mental health/addiction, etc., either in a group or on an individual basis.
Required qualifications:
- Master’s degree
- Registered Psychologist, Registered Social Worker
- Five years experience in a post-secondary environment, with experience both in counselling and preferably counselling services leadership; experience in the area of coordinated care and applied research would be considered an asset
This is a three-year Faculty position, and is open to internal candidates only.
