The Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) can be found on in historic Berkeley County and has a service area of more than 70,000 Veterans in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Martinsburg VAMC offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, podiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.

Major Duties:

• Serves as a Section Chief of Podiatry within the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. Performs direct medical care in their specialty and assists the Chief of Surgery and Deputy Chief of Surgery in supervising the Podiatric Service. Duties will include: Performs complex procedures for cases such as open and closed fractures, dislocations of the foot and ankle, crush injuries, puncture wounds, foreign bodies, lacerations and tendon repairs. Performs debridement of gangrenous and necrotic tissue to include various pedal amputations. Performs common elective surgical procedures such as arthroplasties, osteotomies, bunionectomies, release of nerve entrapments, excision of cysts, fasciotomy, and biopsies. Serves as a consultant to other podiatrists on difficult or unusual cases in the area of podiatric specialties, and as a Subject Matter Expert in Diabetic Wound Care. Provides immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur to individuals presented for care. Provides professional advice to medical staff upon request and in emergency situations with regard to professional management of patients being treated. It is an essential function that the Section Chief is required to participate in the on-call schedule, including but not limited to taking phone calls from hospital staff and residents. Providing surgery or performing appropriate podiatric procedures on an emergency basis in any location deemed necessary to care for patients. Responsible for all administrative activities normally associated with patient care in a setting hospital such as consults and encounters. Maintains required continued Medical Education through conferences, reading programs or other approved CME events. Conducts detailed podiatric examinations and obtains detailed podiatric histories VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Preferred Experience: Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and/or American Board of Podiatric Surgeons. Physical Requirements: : Lifting up to 35 pounds, intermittently; moderate carrying (15-35 pounds), intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices in accordance with the Safe Patient Handling Policy except in emergent situations requiring prompt patient care; pulling, intermittently; pushing, intermittently; reaching above the shoulders, intermittently, both hands required; walking, intermittently; standing, intermittently; kneeling, intermittently; and repeated bending.
