Overview

Microsoft is a company where passionate innovators come to collaborate, envision what can be and take their careers further. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness, and the sky is the limit thinking in a cloud-enabled world.

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

Within Azure Data, the messaging and real-time analytics team provides comprehensive solutions and a robust platform that enables users to ingest high granularity signals (real-time & observability) and complex data, converting those into a competitive advantage in real-time for both end users and modern applications.

Azure Event Hubs is Microsoft’s cloud-scale event streaming platform, designed to ingest and process massive volumes of events with high throughput, low latency, and extreme reliability. The service has been operating at scale for many years and is a core part of Azure’s messaging and data infrastructure.

Event Hubs serves thousands of customers globally, including many S500 enterprises, who rely on it for mission‑critical data ingestion scenarios. It delivers five‑nines availability (99.999%) while processing trillions of events per day across diverse workloads.

Conceptually, Event Hubs is an event streaming service comparable to Kafka, offered as a fully managed, cloud-native platform tightly integrated with Azure. It is widely used to power large‑scale streaming analytics, telemetry pipelines, logs ingestion, and real‑time data processing across the Azure ecosystem, Microsoft products, and customer applications.

We are looking for a Software Engineer II (SDE II) to join the Event Hubs engineering team. In this role, you will work on a mature, high-scale distributed system where correctness, performance, availability, and operational excellence are critical.

You will contribute to designing, evolving, and operating platform capabilities that run 24×7 and are trusted by thousands of customers. The role involves working on complex engineering problems spanning distributed systems, networking, storage, performance optimization, and service reliability.

We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and deliver features and improvements for EventHubs, taking work from conception through production deployment with strong engineering quality.

  • Own feature areas in production at massive scale, ensuring they meet defined SLAs and release readiness criteria, and driving ongoing improvements in reliability, performance, and efficiency for live customer workloads.

  • Write and maintain extensible, reusable code, proactively identify and fix issues, and contribute through effective code reviews, engineering best practices, and continuous improvement.

  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve live production incidents impacting customer workloads, using data-driven troubleshooting and durable fixes to reduce recurrence.

  • Work closely with a geographically distributed team—including product managers and engineers—and collaborate with partner teams and customers to drive key product improvements and resolve technical challenges.
