DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Boston Red Sox Medical Team is dedicated to delivering top-quality care to optimize both the short- and long-term health and performance of our players, in alignment with the organization's values and protocols. Our team fosters a holistic approach by integrating all medical and performance departments to minimize injury and illness, ensure accurate and timely evaluations, and provide long-term strategies for player and staff education.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW:   
The Boston Red Sox are seeking a full-time Minor League Rehab Specialist to join the sports medicine team at their Fort Myers, FL player development complex. The Rehab Specialist will provide comprehensive rehabilitation for players, using evidence-based therapy protocols to maximize on-field performance and implement injury prevention. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Rehabilitation & Player Care: Provide comprehensive clinical evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for non-40-man players, including post-surgical rehab cases, and support 40-man player rehabilitation as needed at the Fort Myers complex. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans to ensure effective recovery and safe return to play.
  • Return-to-Play Planning: In consultation with team physicians and Rehab staff, design and oversee return-to-play progressions while monitoring progress using objective measures and adjust plans as necessary.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work in concert with the sports medicine and performance staff – including athletic trainers (ATCs), strength and conditioning coaches, sports science personnel, and on-field coaches – to develop integrated rehab programs and injury prevention strategies.
  • Communication & Coordination: Maintain clear, daily communication regarding player health status and progress. Provide updates and collaborate with Minor League and Major League athletic training staff, team physicians, coaches, and the front office, as appropriate, to ensure all stakeholders are informed about each player’s rehabilitation and readiness. Coordinate medical appointments or referrals with physicians as needed and contribute to staff meetings on player health.
  • Documentation: Document all treatments and medical updates in the MLB Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system in a timely and thorough manner. Ensure that all player health records are accurate, up-to-date, and comply with league and team standards for medical documentation and confidentiality.
  • Medical Review: Assist in reviewing and evaluating the medical histories of amateur and professional athletes as part of the amateur draft and free agency.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine or Player Development leadership, including assisting with administrative tasks, contributing to research or data collection initiatives, and supporting the sports medicine staff during high-volume periods (e.g., spring training). Flexibility to work non-traditional hours and travel occasionally to Red Sox affiliate sites (or to Dominican Republic academies) is expected, as needed, in a professional baseball environment.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or Athletic Training (AT) completed degree from an accredited program with minimum of five years’ experience in an orthopedic rehabilitation setting.
  • State Licensure: Current license (or immediate eligibility for licensure) to practice as a PT or AT in the state of Florida. (Candidates must either hold a Florida PT or AT license or be able to obtain one promptly upon hire.)
  • Certifications: Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required.
  • Clinical Skills: Strong foundation in orthopedic evaluation, therapeutic exercise, and manual therapy techniques for musculoskeletal injuries. Competency in developing evidence-based rehabilitation programs tailored to athletes.
  • Technology & Records: Basic proficiency with electronic medical record systems and Microsoft Office platforms for documentation and reporting purposes.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Board-certified Sports and/or Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (ABPTS)
  • Manual Therapy Certification: Completion of, or progress toward, an advanced manual therapy certification.
  • Advanced Training: Post-graduate training, such as an orthopedic or sports physical therapy residency/fellowship, is a plus, as is any specialization in treating overhead athletes/baseball players.
  • Additional Skills: Familiarity with strength and conditioning principles (CSCS certification), sports science technology, and data analytics for tracking rehab progress are advantages
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are also beneficial for communicating with a diverse player group.
