POSITION: Accessibility and Media Specialist
STATUS: Full-time employee (0.80 - 0.875 FTE), Lansing

JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsible for producing digital and multimedia content and ensuring it meets high
accessibility standards that are inclusive for individuals who are blind/low vision (BLV) and/or deaf/hard
of hearing (DHH). This role combines technical expertise with an understanding of accessibility best
practices to create, adapt, and audit media content such as videos, documents, websites, and
presentations. This role serves as the primary liaison for systems work in our office that is vital for its
operations with our loan library, book production, and data collection.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Required:
- Possession of an associate’s degree in education with an emphasis in special education.
- 5+ years of experience in media production with a strong focus on accessibility.
- Proficiency with graphic design software including Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, InDesign,
- and Illustrator.
- Proficiency with video and audio recording equipment.
- Video editing experience with tools like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
- Familiarity with WCAG, and other accessibility standards.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, voice recognition).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred:
- Experience with front-end development basics.
- Knowledge of universal design and inclusive education practices.
- Work Environment & Physical Demands
- This position will have a hybrid seasonal work schedule of 64-72 hours/per biweekly pay period.
- Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods.
- Will be required to attend meetings, training, and events throughout the state of
- Michigan.
- Occasional evening and weekend work.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accessible Media Production
- Produce digital documents such as reports, forms, email campaigns, digital displays, and presentation files that are fully accessible for individuals who are BLV or DHH. (properly tagged, alt text, proper reading order, etc.).
- Create and remediate digital media content to meet Web Content Accessibility
- Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1+ and other relevant accessibility standards.
- Produce video content that contains accurate closed captioning, audio descriptions, and ASL interpreting.
- Coordinate with captioners, ASL interpreters, and audio describers to compile and
- embed accessibility into video.
- Coordinate document translation with third party organizations to ensure documents
- are accessible to individuals in a variety of languages. This includes reviewing
- documents and video files as they are received and ensuring the translated media has proper accessibility.
- Live Event Accessibility
- Operate video and audio equipment to facilitate accessible in-person and/or online live events.
- Utilize specialized software to ensure live events provide closed captioning and
- American Sign Language interpreting, while displaying presenters and PowerPoint
- presentations, to ensure fully accessible programming.
- Research and implement new technologies and software to create fully accessible live events.
- Assist Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) and other state agencies with in-person or streamed live event accessibility for individuals who are DHH.
- Review and Quality Assurance
- Audit and test digital media for accessibility.
- Conduct regular content and website reviews to ensure continued compliance with legal and organizational accessibility standards.
- Collaborate with staff to address accessibility issues and gather needs for the websites and systems.
- Analyze feedback from individuals who are blind or low vision and deaf or hard of hearing to implement design and accessibility improvements.
- Consultation and Training
- Advise teams on accessibility requirements and inclusive design principles.
- Develop and deliver training and documentation on accessible media creation tools and techniques.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on accessibility regulations and industry best practices.
- Provide technical assistance on recording and editing videos, photographing events and RBLV and RDHH staff for promotional materials, formatting and editing photos for the web, print, and social media to ensure accessibility for BLV users.
- Project and Process Support
- Collaborate with communications, education, marketing, and web development teams to support accessibility goals.
- Liaison with web development teams in the design and functionality of custom-built websites and web-based tools.
- Serve as technical expert on website and system wireframes and test staging sites to analyze how the layout and design impact the workflow of RBLV and RDHH staff and users.
- Maintain a library of accessible templates, tools, and guidelines.
- Recommend and obtain final management approval for media.
