About the Department

King County Superior Court is accepting applications for a full-time Mediator–Youth & Family position. 

The responsibilities of this classification include providing mediation services in dependency and Becca cases filed in the Juvenile Court in Seattle and in Kent, Washington.  Perform case assessment, mediate, and facilitate conversations between involved parties, and project management/program development.

Work location: Primary work location is located at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, Washington.  The incumbent may be required to work at other court facilities. 

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with days in the office as well as telecommuting. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change.   Employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their King County Superior Court worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  Employees will be provided with a Court-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

Work schedule: This is a full-time position.  The Court's business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work hours for this position may vary, including early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.  This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime eligible.

Position Duties

The following is intended to be a summary of the job functions for this position and does not reflect every task encountered to achieve these functions.

  • Screen referrals and set up files. Research legal files, gather relevant documents, and determine appropriate conflict resolution process.
  • Perform client intake with youth, parents/guardians, and professional parties. Conduct pre-mediation exploratory conversations to develop rapport and identify issues and interests. 
  • Collaborate with Becca case managers and other Family Court staff on case specific matters and program protocol.
  • Conduct mediations and facilitated conversations.  Explain the mediation process, encourage disputants to articulate and clarify issues and needs.  Provide training in conflict resolution concepts; manage escalated arguments and dissenting opinions.  Use techniques to shift from debate to dialogue.
  • Assist parties with distilling agreements developed into a written format.  Provide coaching and consultation.
  • Provide formal and customized informal training and presentations.
  • Develop program policies, procedures, and recommendations, including evaluation and implementation of new and updated alternative dispute resolution programming in youth and family areas of law. 
  • Act as liaison and subject matter expert on alternative dispute resolution for both internal and external community partners. Serve on committees, provide consultation on expansion of ADR in other jurisdictions.
  • Collect and assemble statistical information regarding program operations and outcomes.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level.

Minimum Qualifications

A master’s degree in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Conflict Resolution, Social Work, Law or a directly related field and three years of relevant work experience. Preferred candidates will have completed formal mediation training and/or certification with observation and practicum components.

Experience in case management and general clinical expertise in family/divorce dynamics, child abuse, child development, domestic violence, counseling, substance abuse, mental health, conflict assessment, and practice that fosters a culture of civility.

Knowledge of principles and trends in mediation, alternative dispute resolution processes, and conflict resolution techniques.  Knowledge of state and local mediation laws, and trauma-informed practice. Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion principles.

Proficiency in using computer technology and Microsoft Office programs.   Knowledge of and ability to learn specialized software applications including entering and retrieving data from databases.

Special requirements: The ability to reliably travel throughout the county is required. Finalists are subject to the Washington State Patrol criminal background check and a reference check. Criminal background records are not automatically disqualifying.
