SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Director of Facilities, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, is responsible for ensuring optimal functioning of building systems including mechanical, electrical, security, and fire/life safety. They will manage the design, planning, construction, and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and other facilities. Our ideal candidate is familiar with regulatory compliance and facilities management standard practices. Ultimately, the Director of Facilities will ensure that our building infrastructure meets the needs of our students, employees, enables productivity, and aligns with our company’s mission, vision, values and strategic goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage all aspects of facilities, including maintenance, custodial, and security services
  • Strong people leader and motivator; proactive and growth mindset
  • Maintain a customer-focused outlook
  • Develop plans for building maintenance and capital improvements
  • Oversee the functioning of all building systems including mechanical, electrical, and fire/life safety
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders for facilities projects
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and industry codes
  • Monitor facilities annual goals, KPIs, and budgets to assess cost-effectiveness and performance
  • Maintain accurate records of the condition of the equipment and other systems in the building
  • Create a plan for equipment procurement, maintenance, and renewal
  • Direct and plan essential central and outsourced services such as security, maintenance, mail, cleaning, waste disposal, recycling, etc
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Proven experience as a Director of Facilities or similar leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of technical/engineering operations and facilities management best practices
  • Experience in project management
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities
  • Good understanding of technical aspects of property (Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning, Electrical, etc.)
  • Strong collaborator, advisor, and excellent communicator 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position oversees our Facilities Manager. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in a school environment that includes both administrative offices and career and technical education (CTE) program areas, such as labs, workshops, and instructional spaces that simulate real-world industry settings. The employee will also spend time outdoors overseeing building and grounds maintenance. The environment is fast-paced and may require balancing multiple priorities while working collaboratively with staff, contractors, and vendors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be:

  • Exposed to varying temperatures and weather conditions while inspecting or directing maintenance and construction projects.
  • Occasionally exposed to noise, dust, odors, or equipment related to CTE programs (e.g., construction, electrician, dental).
  • Required to respond to facility emergencies outside of normal working hours.
  • Expected to adhere to all safety protocols and ensure compliance with OSHA and school safety standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Move about campus buildings and grounds frequently throughout the day.
  • Sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach as necessary to inspect facilities, meet with staff, and oversee maintenance and custodial operations.
  • Use hands and arms to operate computers, phones, hand tools, and other equipment related to building and grounds maintenance.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally climb ladders or access rooftops, crawl spaces, and mechanical areas to inspect systems or direct repairs.
  • Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including during inclement weather or emergency situations.
  • Communicate effectively in environments that may include noise from students, staff, and equipment.

POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It is not eligible for overtime pay. Expected hours of the position are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Nights and weekends may be required to meet the expectations of the job. 

TRAVEL

Limited local travel is expected. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • BS/BA in Facility Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or relevant field

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant professional qualification (e.g. CFM-Certified Facilities Manager) will be an advantage
