Certified Medical Assistant II

Provides basic medical care and health teaching to patients in an outpatient, non-emergency care setting for an outpatient medical practice.

Job Qualifications

BLS Required

High School Diploma/GED and current certification required.

Graduate of an approved school or institution for Medical Assistants preferred.

Moderate Pharmacological Knowledge

Meets/Exceeds qualifications of Level 1

Duties and Responsibilities

Level II

In addition to all tasks included in level 1

Process medication refill requests according to protocols

Perform surgical aseptic procedures

            Wrap and autoclave an instrument

            Utilize a transfer forceps

            Open a sterile pack

            Set up a sterile tray

            Apply and remove sterile gloves

            Perform a sterile dressing change

            Assist with minor office surgery

            Remove sutures

Recognize emergencies

            Distinguish between emergency and non-emergency situations

            Follow emergency protocols

Prepare instruments for procedures

            Instruct patients in preparation for examinations and procedures

                        Routine physical exams

                        Specialty exams

            Position and drape patient according to procedure

            Prepare and or secure patients written consent as required

            Instruct and inform patients in preparation for procedures and examinations

            Apply principles of radiation safety if assisting with radiographic procedures

                        Wear dosimetry badge

                        Protect patient from undue exposure

            Provide post procedure written instructions

Assist provider with examinations and treatments

            Prepare supplies for procedures and treatments

                        Anticipate needs of provider

                        Chart procedures

                        Provide patient with written instructions

Use quality control during:

            Patient preparation

            Specimen collection and handling

            Reagent management

            Instrument calibration

            Laboratory testing

            Diagnostic testing

Prepare and maintain quality control logs

            Record quality control data

            Ensure records are accurate and up to date

Collect and process specimens

            Complete laboratory request forms

            Instruct patient in specimen collection

            Prepare equipment and supplies for collection

            Collect and label specimen as applicable for setting

                        Blood

            Process specimen after collection

            Prepare / fix specimen for examination

            Arrange for delivery of specimens for laboratory testing

            Dispose of specimen and collection equipment appropriately

Perform Point of Care testing as applicable to practice setting

Perform electrocardiogram and provide results to provider

            12 lead

            Rhythm strip

Perform vision testing and record results

            Distance visual acuity

            Near visual acuity

            Color blindness

Administer medications as directed by provider

            Select proper medication to administer

             Oral solid medication

             Oral liquid medication

             Prepare single dose syringe

Intradermal injection

            Subcutaneous injection

            Intramuscular injection

            Topical medication

            Eye drops

            Ear drops

      

Determine need for documentation and reporting as applicable to specialty

            Identify sources of information for medicolegal documentation requirements in given locality

            Observe state, local, and federal guidelines for statutory reports

            Obtain & comply with employment guidelines from appropriate agency and comply

            Complete incident reports promptly for all occurrences

            Comply with workers compensation reporting requirements

            Document all activity related to patient care in the medical record

Operate and maintain facilities and equipment safety

            Operate office equipment safely

            Inspect equipment and determine elementary problems

            Determine the need for maintenance or service

            Arrange for the repair of office equipment
