About the Department

The Cosumnes Community Services District ("District") Parks and Recreation Department is seeking part-time Assistant Recreation Coordinators within the Youth Development Division for the Expanded Learning Afterschool programs.  

Position Description:

Under general supervision, the Assistant Recreation Coordinator plans and organizes regular activities/programs for a specific program area or site/facility. This position reports to the Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Supervisor. The Assistant Recreation Coordinator provides lead direction to lower-level workers in the program to which the position is assigned. This position does not exercise any supervisory responsibilities.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Recreation Coordinator serves as the on-site lead for an elementary school-based program operated in partnership with Elk Grove Unified School District. This is a fast-paced, dynamic position responsible for the daily care and supervision of 200+ school-age children and the leadership of a site team of approximately 15 staff, including Recreation Leaders, Specialists, and Site Directors. 

Working closely with the Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Supervisor, the Assistant Recreation Coordinator plays a key role in developing and implementing the annual site program plan and ensuring alignment with the mission and values of Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD). This position requires a high level of adaptability, operational oversight, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide daily, hands-on leadership for a high-quality Expanded Learning Afterschool Program. 
  • Supervise and support site staff to ensure a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment. 
  • Plan and organize activities and enrichment programs that support student development. 
  • Serve as the primary on-site liaison between Cosumnes CSD, school administrators, and families. 
  • Communicate effectively with caregivers, school staff, and District leadership. 
  • Uphold and model best practices in customer service, youth development, and program safety
  • Monitor program performance and help achieve specific annual operational goals
  • Participate in district-wide trainings, meetings, and events beyond the standard site hours. 

Work Schedule: 

Typical working hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM–6:00 PM, aligned with the EGUSD academic calendar. Occasional flexibility is required for evening or weekend events and district-wide trainings at various Cosumnes CSD locations.  Actual hours may vary and are subject to change based on the department's needs.

Salary Information
The salary range for the Assistant Recreation Coordinator Leader classification is between $24.25 -$25.75  per hour. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge, and shall be no more than the midpoint of the salary range.

Position Duties

The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Plans, organizes, schedules, and evaluates assigned recreation programs or facilities;
  • Works with Independent Contracted Instructors;
  • Uses registration software to monitor program registration and contract status or participant payments;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Accountable for all program participants during program hours;
  • Completes and maintains reports and forms as necessary;
  • Provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from CSD and Department policies and procedures manuals;
  • Reports any potentially unsafe conditions to supervisor;
  • Responsible for, and may assist with, set up and clean up of facility and equipment;
  • Enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by CSD policies;
  • Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with Department safety standards and the CSD Injury and Illness Prevention Program;
  • Purchases and maintains program/facility supplies and equipment in accordance with policy;
  • Performs emergency procedures when needed;
  • Coordinates with the private security service of the assigned program/facility and reports any security issues during assigned shift;
  • Develops and implements program/facility surveys;
  • Monitors behavior of participants;
  • Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by CSD guidelines;
  • Attends required training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth;
  • Communicates with parents, participants and the public; discusses program concerns and participation issues and provides solutions when appropriate;
  • Provides assistance to supervisors and lower-level staff as required;
  • Makes recommendations and provides feedback to supervisory staff regarding, selection, training, discipline, evaluation and salary of lower level workers;
  • Collects and reviews timesheets of lower level workers;
  • Required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays;
  • Assists with the preparation and monitoring of the program/facility budget;
  • Assists in program/facility outreach and marketing;
  • May plan and conduct staff meetings and participate in program planning and preparation;
  • May collaborate with Facility/Recreation Supervisor to oversee the completion of reservation permits for recreation facility rentals;
  • May act as department liaison to the community;
  • May take part in various ad-hoc committees;
  • May recruit, select, train, schedule and provide day to day lead direction to volunteers of the assigned program/facility;
  • May perform front office duties in the absence of office staff;
  • May perform duties in the absence of higher level staff as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. The education or experience requirement may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the General Manager. At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; however, both requirements cannot be modified or waived. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
 
Education and Training: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; 
  • Completion of thirty (30) semester units from an accredited college or university in a closely related field to which the position is assigned. 

Preferred:  Proof of passing the Para-Educator proficiency exam. 

Experience: 
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible work experience or equivalent community/volunteer service in the field to which the position is assigned. 

Special Requirements: 
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR/AED certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment; Certification must be maintained through employment; 
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license, with a clean driving record, and maintain it throughout employment; 
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Knowledge of:
  • Current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating recreation programs or facilities;
  • Proficiency in computer database programs, desktop publishing and word processing in currently used programs such as Word, Excel, CLASS, VISIO and PowerPoint;
  • Basic operation of automated office machines including calculator, computer, keyboard, printers and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine;
  • Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages and fractions;
  • Principles of rational systems such as budgeting.

Ability to:
  • Effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, facility users, independent contractors, vendors, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Comprehend and prepare reports and forms such as accident, incident, and behavior reports; emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style;
  • Lead the work of others including the assigning, reviewing, planning and coordination of work; providing clear instruction and guidance on a day to day basis;
  • Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving fairly non-routine situations such as discussing a child's discipline with parents or deciding whether to implement new activities or programs.
  • Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting at desk or in meetings for long periods of time; occasionally reaching and twisting to reach equipment surrounding desk; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting while performing field work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting up to fifty (50) pounds for setting up programs, special events and/or sports team equipment;
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment and recreation related tools such as, but not limited to, baseball equipment, field preparation equipment and hand tools;
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone;
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; ability to remain calm in emergency situations; occasionally works alone;
  • Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving. 


Typical Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office environment and/or outside in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.

THE PROCESS:

  • Supplemental Questions: The supplemental questions are considered a part of the application process. All required questions must be completed before the application can be submitted. Depending on the size of the applicant pool, the supplemental questions may be used as a part of the supplemental screening.
  • Supplemental Screening:  The district will review the responses to the supplemental questions of all candidates meeting the minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates in the applicant pool will be selected to continue in the selection process.

Oral Panel Interview - Candidates who pass the application review will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview. Tentative interview date: December 4, 2025.  

Conditional Offer: Candidates selected from the process receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:
Reference Check: verification of work performance and employment history
Background Check:  A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check;
  • Driving Record:  A State of California DMV driving record printout will be required.
Upon successful completion of the background check, candidates must complete the following before final appointment:
  • Medical: A clear drug and tuberculosis screening will be required.
  • Work EligibilityThe District participates in E-Verify to confirm authorization to work in the US.
Failure to meet these pre-employment requirements will be grounds for withdrawal of the conditional offer of employment.

Probationary Period: A probationary period of one (1) year is the final phase of the selection process.

  • The District participates in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). New members in the CalPERS system will receive a retirement formula of 2% at 62. Applicants who meet the CalPERS requirements for a "classic member" will receive a retirement formula of 2% at 55.
