Diesel Mechanic

Position Summary:
As an Diesel Mechanic, you will provide technical support for working in material condition assessment, corrective maintenance, fault diagnostics, recommendations, testing, and process improvement to Southwest Regional Maintenance Center for the repair of Navy ship diesel engines. This position will be under limited supervision.

Clearance Required:
Must be a US Citizen with an Active Secret Clearance

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Reviews or prepares Process Control Procedures (PCPs) for diesel engine work.
Briefs ships' crew and managers on the status of assigned tasks and/or repairs.
Provides on-the-job training to ship crews when conducting maintenance and/or critical repairs.
Use technical knowledge and experience to troubleshoot faults and casualties on various diesel engines and associated auxiliary equipment and systems.
Assist in identifying causes of equipment/system failure at the component level.
Provides technical assistance and on-the-job training to active duty and other government personnel relative to the operation, maintenance, grooming, overhaul, and repair of diesel engines.
Work from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform testing, checkout and trouble-shooting functions
Perform non-routine assignments involving relatively limited scope through larger, more diverse repairs.
Perform tests to evaluate engine and/or component performance in accordance with technical guidance utilizing specified tool and/or of instruments.
Analyzes test results, prepare reports on findings and provide recommendations.
Performs complex operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment.
Gathers and maintains specified records of engineering data such as tests, drawings, etc.

Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent
4+ years of related experience with shipboard systems and associated systems.
Strong technical comprehension with the ability to read and interpret manuals and standards.
Effective communication skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
Formal training in diesel engine operation, maintenance & diagnostics from any of the following Navy Diesel Engine Training Courses or Original Equipment Manufacturer schools relevant to:
Colt Pielstick, Model PC 2.5
Colt Pielstick, Model PA6B STC
Caterpillar, Model 3512B
General Motors, Model EMD 645E
American Locomotive (ALCO), Model 251-C
Isotta-Fraschini, Model 36SS6V
MTU, Model 20V 8000 M90
Caterpillar, Model 3608
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related technical applications.
Experience with Formal Work Procedures (FWPs) and Controlled Work Procedures (CWPs) IAW JFFM may be substituted for PCP experience.
Knowledge of 3M
Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience:
Navy NEC: 733B, U13A, U24A, U25A, U26A.
Knowledgeable in Navy QA and Planning procedures
Knowledgeable in Navy Quality assurance practices and Joint Fleet.
Maintenance Manual (JFMM) chapters relating to maintenance of diesel engines.

Physical Demands and Expectations:
Regular physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, and standing; frequent periods of prolonged sitting may be required.
Ability to work in an industrial shipboard/shipyard environment, climb shipboard ladders and wear all required safety equipment.
Able to lift (up to 50lb), carry, and transport heavy equipment and materials required for the job.
Maneuvering around tight spaces in a shipboard environment
Ability to speak, read, hear, and write, with or without assistance.
Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax, and other office equipment.
