The University Nursery offers facilities for children aged between 10 weeks and 5 years, the nursery is divided into sections appropriate to the ages and development of the children.  We are committed to providing a professional, customer focused service to a diverse range of people. 

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, driven, reliable and capable of providing highly efficient and effective service to customers.  Reporting to the Manager, this role will have a degree of autonomy, and exercise a high level of judgement regarding the operation of the Nursery Service at Cardiff University.  

The Section Leader is responsible for the care of a group of children, within a certain age group, and the supervision of Nursery Nurses and Nursery Assistants. 

This post is fixed term for 1 year (maternity cover), 37.5 hours per week , 5 out of 7 days.  The hours will be determined by the Line Manager so that the centre is staffed from 8.00am - 6.00pm. This 37.5 hour contract also attracts an uplift for hours 35 - 37.5. 

Starting Salary: £25,449 per annum (Grade 3)   

This is a campus based role.

Job Description

Main Duties
  1. To supervise and care for children.  Ensure we deliver a high quality of care and act in accordance with regulatory requirements.  Organise and co-ordinate a schedule of activities for the children within the section in consultation with the Day Care Manager.  Keep an up-to-date plan of activities:  these must be broken down into weekly plans.  Set up and manage key worker groups.  Check staff key-worker books: ensure they are up to date, neat, tidy and spelling is correct.  Be aware of each child’s developmental stage.  Ensure all staff in the section are informed of and understand each child’s dietary requirements.  Dietary sheets in kitchen are up to date, neat and tidy so all staff can read them.
  2. To supervise the nursery nurses / assistants in the appropriate section.  Give appropriate advice and guidance when required to team members.  Operate monthly room meetings.  Give team members adequate advance notice of when these meetings will happen so they can come forward with agenda items.  Ensure all staff sign the notes of these meetings and absences are noted.
  3. To be aware of the requirements of the Children Act and to ensure adherence to these regulations and those required by CIW.  Monitor staff compliance with standards of care operated at the setting and address shortcomings.  To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
  4. To assist with the staff induction and training programmes.  Carry out room inductions with any staff member that goes to work in the room (whether they are new to the nursery or have come from another section to be based in the room).  Update any staff member on all information they have missed when they have been on leave or covering in another section.  Make sure you update yourselves on return to work after any absence and sign any paperwork to show you have done this.
  5. To report any matters regarding the running of the nursery to the Day Care Manager.
  6. To maintain accurate records.  Have registers ready at least six weeks in advance.   Ensure contact books are up to date, accurate and legible.  Completed as instructed by management.  Correctly complete accident/incident reports as required.  Check the accident/incident books monthly.  If a pattern or irregularities appear report to the Centre management immediately.
  7. To provide effective liaison with parents.  Be approachable to parents/carers and ensure there is a good collaborative working relationship with them.   Inform them of all that is happening with their child/children as well as what is going on in the room.  Pass on information from parents to all staff and record these in the appropriate place.  Make sure all staff sign to say they have had update on return to work/room and update them on any meetings that have taken place in their absence, again they will have sign and date the meetings book.

  1. To carry out risk assessments of any work area and make sure that staff in the team also do this.   To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer.
  2. To ask for help from management when required.  Inform management of any issues that you or your staff have had to deal with.
  3. To set up nursery equipment.  Sterilise baby equipment.  Carry out general cleaning to maintain nursery hygiene.  Carry out laundry duties. 
  4. To carry out annual PDR’s of the staff in your section and monthly one to one meetings.
  5. When deputising in manager’s absence, complete staffing schedules while maintaining staff shift patterns. Order receipt and enter invoices onto Oracle. Monitor ratio’s and provide cover when required. Deal with any queries from parents and visitors. Regularly check Day Care e-mails and respond accordingly. Supervise all staff making sure everyone is in ratio and carrying out duties.

General Duties
  1. To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
  2. Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  3. To abide by university policies on Health and Safety.
  4. To assist the Manager in managing and ensuring that all Day Care operations comply with statutory requirements.
  5. Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

 The role will require a flexible approach to working hours and is 5 days out of 7 (pro rata for part time staff).

CAMPUS SERVICES INFORMATION

Campus Services provides a range of professional support services to students, staff and visitors at Cardiff University.
 
Residences manages accommodation places for approximately 5,500 students, both catered and self-catered.
 

In terms of catering, there are cafés and restaurants conveniently located across university campuses, in addition to a delivered hospitality service.
 
Cardiff University Sport exists to provide students and staff with a balanced, high quality and integrated sport service which meets the needs of a broad range of users.

The Nursery offers facilities for children aged between 10 weeks and 5 years and is divided into sections appropriate to the ages and development of the children.
 
Both residential and catering facilities are utilised for conferences and functions during the University’s vacation periods.  A purpose built and designed conference centre and conference facility is also available throughout the year.
 
The Campus Services operation is supported by its own central administration functions covering the allocation of residences, human resource and quality, purchasing, facilities, finance, and general administration.
