About the Department

The Bailiff Sergeant directs and monitors the daily operational activities of an assigned unit in the Security Services Division of the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office by providing supervision to assigned staff, training in new methods and procedures, coaching and mentoring, enforcing policies, rules, and regulations, and evaluating work performance. This position performs backup responsibilities of Deputy Sheriff enforcing federal, state, and local laws. 


Position Duties

  • Sustains ongoing verbal and written communication with both supervisors and subordinates regarding area of work responsibility; confers regularly with Lieutenant and/or other supervisors to communicate concerns and receive orders; reviews activity log and determines the status of activities through necessary means of communication; leads and directs specialty teams and coordinates special projects as assigned.
  • Directs knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision to participate in decisions on hiring, retention, discipline, and other personnel matters; supervises and manages activities of staff that includes determining work procedures and schedules and developing methods for expediting workflow; approves employee requests for leave and overtime as required by operational necessity; evaluates employee performance; coaches and counsels staff to achieve improved performance and productivity; recommends corrective disciplinary action as needed; identifies individual training needs in order to achieve greater departmental performance and productivity, and compliance with legal requirements; conducts inspections of staff, equipment, and documentation of activities to ensure operational readiness and adherence to established standards; investigates allegations of misconduct involving subordinates.
  • Actively manages inmate behavior and activities to ensure inmates obey the rules; researches and responds to correspondence from inmates regarding complaints, appeals, and requests for assistance; interprets individuals’ mental and physical condition to determine best course of action for resolution; practices constructive interpersonal skills to obtain maximum cooperation with minimum coercion.
  • Provides effective and credible testimony in a court of law; thoroughly reviews case facts in preparation of testimony.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external partners; communicates on public safety related matters; serves as liaison between the Sheriff’s Office and the community in public relations capacity; responds to questions and complaints from the public, assigned personnel, County departments, and other agencies; participates in meetings with departmental personnel, outside agencies, and other County departments to ensure that divisional activities and departmental matters are communicated and reviewed.
  • Proficiently utilizes police related equipment as warranted, such as cameras, weapons, radios, driving of emergency vehicles, tear gas and gas mask, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • In the absence of the Lieutenant, exercises delegated authority and responsibilities of that position; may be assigned to cover Field Services Sergeant responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 60 college credits in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer.
  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.
  • Fingerprinting will be kept on file for identification purposes.
  • Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
  • Position will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Position will require a psychological examination.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification. 
  • As a condition of continued employment, attend 24 hours of annual ongoing training in law enforcement/corrections. 

Other Qualifications

  • Associate degree in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field.
  • Training or experience in practices and principles of supervision.
  • Experience or training in personal computer use with Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.
