Our Opportunity:
Chewy is seeking a Software Engineer I to join an established technology team within our Discovery organization in Bellevue, WA. At Chewy, it is our mission to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents (and partners) everywhere. As part of the Search and Listings team, you will have the ability to improve or build new functionality as part of a high-performing engineering team that values broad-based technical skills in cloud-based services, large language models, databases, serverless technologies, and more. You'll contribute directly to our backend services that power search and browse pages across the site, participating in the full software development lifecycle — from crafting and building scalable systems to delivering personalized and memorable customer experiences.
What You'll Do:
As a Software Engineer I focusing on back-end development of our Search and Listings Team, you will work to deliver an outstanding experience for our Pet Parents. Your work will directly impact millions of customers who care for their furry family members every day. This includes:
- Applying algorithms, data structures, and design patterns to produce efficient and performant code
- Developing, extending, and debugging code within the scope of the team’s existing tools and services
- Completing simple design and debug tasks
- Solve root causes of and solutions for bugs and production issues
- Contributing to the team’s standard processes for logging, testing, instrumentation, metrics, monitors, alerts, practices, and processes
- Making meaningful contributions to the team's existing service architecture, data architecture, dev-ops, and infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, and public cloud services as part of a software development team
- Participating in on-call rotations and operational excellence
What You’ll Need:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or similar; or equivalent experience
- 1+ years of Software Engineering experience
- Hands-on experience in designing, building, and deploying scalable, highly available systems
- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full SDLC, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals – object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
- Knowledge of cloud technologies, databases and operating systems
- Able to conduct root causes of and solutions for bugs and production issues.
- Experience building and integrating with RESTful APIs using Java, Kotlin, or an equivalent Language
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in e-commerce or Search systems
- Experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms
- Experience with Scrum, or other agile methodologies
- Experience with configuration and deployment management and be hands on technology infrastructure, network, compute, storage, and virtualization experience
- Experience with OpenSearch, LLMs, and Vector databases

The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant.

Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
