Description
OBJECTIVE
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Sawyer to join our Mill team. The Sawyer is responsible for accurately cutting lumber and other building materials to specified dimensions while minimizing waste and ensuring high-quality standards. This position plays a key role in maintaining production efficiency, supporting custom orders, and ensuring that all materials are processed according to company and customer specifications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate saws and related cutting equipment safely and efficiently.
- Work on more complex aspects of material cutting as assigned.
- Cut stock and fall-down materials to specified sizes with precision and minimal waste.
- Read and interpret cut sheets, drawings, and material lists accurately.
- Inspect materials for defects, irregularities, and quality prior to cutting.
- Maintain accurate records of cuts, waste, and material usage.
- Keep the work area organized, clean, and compliant with company safety standards.
- Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on saw equipment.
- Collaborate with yard and production staff to meet daily and weekly production goals.
- Communicate with leadership when additional materials are needed for specific jobs.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings and processes critical to task success to ensure error-free and damage-free results.
- Track materials per job and complete daily production schedules accurately and on time.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Previous experience operating industrial saws or working in a lumber yard, mill, or manufacturing environment preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measurement.
- Ability to read and interpret cut lists, drawings, and production orders.
- Basic math and reading skills required.
- Commitment to workplace safety and proper equipment handling.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 5+ years of experience operating woodworking machinery.
- Proven track record of machine operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Forklift certification preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Stand, crouch, bend, move, reach, and walk for extended periods (8+ hours/day).
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry lumber and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Work performed in an indoor/outdoor mill environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Ability to operate machinery, hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and power equipment.
