Job Description Summary:
Provides advanced levels of equipment and/or departmental service and support. Performs preventive maintenance, quality assurance inspections, installation, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and general maintenance on biomedical, clinical data/network systems, and related technologies.
Job Description:
Completes the preventive maintenance (PM) workload to achieve a consistently high level of PM compliance over time. Reviews, modifies, develops, and implements written preventive maintenance manuals and quality assurance testing procedures for medical equipment. Reviews incident reports related to equipment malfunction or misuse and takes appropriate actions to ensure patient safety. Leads new equipment evaluations, acquisitions, and installations. Obtains quotes through current requisition processes and works with technical specifications related to bids and capital purchases. Exercises proper judgment in evaluating the extent/source of repairs on malfunctioning equipment and determines the course of action needed to cost-effectively maximize equipment uptime. Seeks out best value products and labor and parts sources to minimize the total cost of service to the organization. Provides in-service training to other clinical engineering service technicians. Leads continuous performance improvement initiatives related to medical equipment use. Prioritizes scheduled maintenance in accordance with medical equipment maintenance management policy. Responds to requests for maintenance services from equipment users; performs initial assessment, problem verification, and troubleshooting. Reviews FDA, ECRI, manufacturer, and/or other device recall and problem notification sources to verify if any of the covered equipment falls within the problem equipment listings. Periodically conform to a flexible work schedule on an as-needed basis. Participate in on-call rotation and upgrade support.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Participates in continuous performance improvement initiatives related to medical equipment use
 - Participate in new equipment evaluations, acquisitions, and installations
 - Assist with recall/alert identification and management
 - Prioritizes scheduled maintenance in accordance with medical equipment maintenance management policy
 - Responds to requests for maintenance services from equipment users; performs initial assessment, problem
 - Reviews Incident Reports related to equipment malfunction or misuse and takes actions to ensure patient safety
 - Attending vendor sponsored technical training service schools
 - Special projects and other duties in support of the hospital system as assigned
 - Periodically conform to a flexible work schedule on an as-needed basis
 - Participates in on-call rotation and upgrade support
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to respond to diagnostic ultrasound, portable fluoroscopy, and dye injector service calls
 - Ability to respond to service calls in the operating rooms
 - Ability to communicate and function independently in a customer-focused service environment and to use computer software-based work order tracking systems to document repair and maintenance services
 - Proficiency in performing database management functions regarding maintaining accurate device control records
 - Competence and independence in potential crisis situations while appropriately alerting management
 - Flexibility in accommodating customer needs
 - Knowledge of state-of-the-art electronic test equipment and simulators
 - Proficient in the repair and preventive maintenance of at least eight of the following devices: Anesthesia Machines, Anesthetic Gas Analyzers, Blood Cell Savers, Diagnostic Ultrasound, ECMO Console, EEG Equipment, EMR System Interface, Fetal Monitoring System, Hemodialysis Machines, IABPs, Infant Care Equipment, Lab Analyzers, Medical Lasers, Patient Monitoring Systems, Perfusion Console, Pulmonary Function Testers, Portable Fluoroscopy, Sterilizers (steam or plasma), Telemetry Monitoring Systems, Tissue Processors, and Ventilators (adult or infant)
 - Ability to work well in a team environment and to be self-motivated and self-disciplined
 - Effectively deals with multiple and changing priorities
 - Must be able to visit multiple business locations. (Dependent on employment location)
 - Ability and willingness to travel to remote hospital sites and to periodically conform to a flexible work schedule on an as-needed basis
 
Education:
- Associate degree in Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields
 - Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields
 
Experience:
- Minimum 4 years’ progressive experience performing electronic and/or electromechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on both general and specialized biomedical equipment
 - Preferred: 5+ years’ progressive experience performing electronic and/or electromechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on both general and specialized biomedical equipment
 
Licenses and Certifications:
- Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) and/or Military (DoD) Biomedical Equipment Technician certification
 - Vendor and manufacturer (OEM) repair/training certification(s) or similar credentials
 
Additional Experience:
- Any GE PCS/Telemetry experience would be a plus
 
Work Schedule and Requirements:
- Standard support (work) hours are Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 6:00 PM (8-hour day / split shift)
 - Shift 1: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm / Shift 2: 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
 - Some after hours, weekend, and holiday work may be required
 - Some positions may be responsible for multiple locations in the same geographic area
 - Some site-to-site travel may be required
 - Flexible work schedule required to accommodate early morning or evening repairs as needed
 - Positions participate in a weekly on-call rotation for after-hours and weekend support
 - All Biomedical and Imaging positions will be based out of 1 of the locations below
