Position Summary
The Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting is directly responsible for managing the preparation of financial statements.
Position Specific Responsibilities
- Manages the monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for internal and external use to ensure completeness and accuracy of such reports and consistent with US GAAP.
- Supervises the accounting department, including day to day operations of general accounting functions, including operational expense management, balance sheet management, lease accounting and accounts payable administration.
- Responsible for evaluating adherence to current accounting policies and implementation of policies and procedures for new accounting pronouncements. Identifies and implements resolutions for emerging accounting issues.
- Accountable for month end and year end closing processes.
- Presents monthly financial results to executive leadership with concise variance explanations from budget and prior periods. Evaluate current internal reporting for opportunities to implement best practices based on the needs of the end users of the financial statements.
- Provides training for Executive Directors on viewing financial data in HOST.
- Responsible for the administration of the annual external audit.
- Review the company’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances.
- Maintain an understanding of all financially related information systems and continually seek to improve the efficacy and efficiency of these systems. Utilize accounting IT system to facilitate processes, improve business performance and maintain financial data; Participates in IT system optimization activities.
- Participate in acquisition accounting and integration activities, including IT system integration.
- Assists the Vice President Chief Accounting Officer & Corporate Controller with performing accounting diligence on proposed acquisition targets.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including special projects related to emerging accounting and finance topics.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
- Six (6) to ten (10) years of experience with financial reporting required.
Skills
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.
- Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy. Required to attend meetings with other managers to explain financial policies. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekend. Must spend some time keeping up with the field by attending seminars and professional meetings. Must be able to travel occasionally. An excellent knowledge of US GAAP rules and regulations is required combined with the ability to research and propose company positions on complex accounting issues. Required to maintain an active CPA license. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
- Certified Public Accountant license required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
