Title: Payroll Specialist

Location: River House - 211 SE Caruthers St., Portland, OR 97214

Schedule: This is a hybrid position, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM with three days in office, two working from home.

Wage Range: $25.85 – $34.95 hourly, non-exempt

Position Overview:


The Payroll Specialist is responsible for accurately processing and recording NARA NW’s bi-weekly payroll, ensuring compliance with payroll regulations, and assisting with related administrative and cross-departmental projects as needed. This role requires strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to provide excellent support to employees regarding payroll matters.



What you will do:


  • Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time.
  • Administer payroll-related liabilities, including garnishments, taxes, and 401(k) contributions.
  • Process special types of pay such as retroactive pay, shift differentials, and on-call pay.
  • Prepare and reconcile monthly benefit plan insurance adjustments.
  • Respond to and resolve employee inquiries related to payroll in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide Paycom training and support for staff.
  • Maintain Paycom system data, including employee updates, changes, and corrections.
  • Collaborate with team members and work independently on special payroll or administrative projects

Qualifications


We would like to hear from people that have:

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic payroll systems (Paycom experience preferred), basic accounting principles, Microsoft Office applications, and strong Excel skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to explain payroll information clearly and professionally.
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and prioritization abilities with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries while working respectfully and collaboratively with clients, coworkers, and community partners.
  • Experience working with Native American/Alaska Native communities is highly valued.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment (and for-cause) drug test, as well as criminal background and DMV checks.
