The Utility Billing office is seeking an experienced, dynamic, confident, and detailed oriented individual to provide professional customer service to the citizens of Lynchburg.  The individual should be able to handle complex and routine customer situations.  The individual must be a high performer and be able to work in a customer-focused team environment. They will need to have strong customer service skills in person and over the telephone and Microsoft Office skills related to database file maintenance using Windows applications. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

  • Provide professional and courteous customer service to internal and external customers in person, over the phone, and in writing
  • Establish water/sewer service for citizens either moving into the area or transferring within the area
  • Assist citizens with finalizing their water/sewer account
  • Fulfill a citizen's need and/or request while providing accurate, valid, and complete information to the citizen
  • Handle citizen's request and/or complaints to reach an appropriate solution while clearly explaining the resolution to the citizen 
  • Listen and respond to citizen's needs and/or concerns
  • Record accurate information on customer's accounts
  • Utilize City resources within employee's control to assist internal and external customers efficiently and effectively 
  • Interpret and follow Office Policies and Procedures, Virginia State Code, and City Code
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 3 to 5 years customer service experience preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Advanced skill in specific job-related application and equipment

Other Qualifications

Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days if employment.  May also be required to complete higher level of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.

Depending on work assignment may be required to have a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.

Relevant background must be completed and approved.
