What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers competitive pay commensurate with education and experience.  New hires are typically brought into the organization between $19.59 and $24.49.  We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

The City and County of Denver has announced furlough days, or unpaid days off, for most employees to meet a budget shortfall in 2025. There is one fixed furlough day for all limited (temporary positions with an end date) and unlimited (permanent) employees on November 28th, the day after Thanksgiving. If you receive an offer for this position, your annual pay will determine whether you are required to take additional furlough days. Details will be discussed during the offer process for selected candidate.

Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. This position reports to our offices at 1200 N. Federal Boulevard in Denver three days a week and telecommutes remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days. In this position you can expect to be required to work onsite during specific days, according to agency needs. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

Specifically, as an Accounting Technician I your primary duties will consist of the following:

  • Review and approve child welfare payments to foster care and adoption providers on a monthly basis.  
  • Identify, report and resolve billing discrepancies swiftly and independently.
  • Use a variety of data sources (state systems, city systems, databases) to assist with the reviewing and tracking of work products.  
  • Respond to inquiries from a variety of customers (both internal and external) regarding payment information, direct deposit status, contract questions, and any related concerns within 48 hours.  
  • Provide technical assistance to team members and department employees regarding complicated child welfare payroll issues, including resolution of provider concerns regarding child welfare payments.
  • Act as liaison between the Child Welfare division and Trails Help Desk team for issues related to the Integrated Case Management system.
  • Identify areas for process improvement and make recommendations to the Payment Services team supervisor.
  • Assist the Payment Services team supervisor and other Financial Services managers as needed with ad hoc reports, data requests, or other projects.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Experience with child welfare payments in the State of Colorado’s Trails child welfare information system, to include out-of-home, adoption, core services and case services payments
  • Experience with the Integrated Case Management system  
  • Ability to research contracts and calculate payment amounts based on information in those contracts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel
  • Previous work in Human Services or within a government agency
  • Confident with using computers and learning new software systems
  • Ability to work independently under strict time constraints
  • Must be versatile and able to handle changing priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Problem solving abilities
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Ability to accommodate pre-determined in-office work days

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience performing financial recordkeeping, reconciliation of accounting discrepancies, and making journal and ledger entries.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
  • License/Certifications: None
