As a Communicable Disease Health Educator with the North Central Health District you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.

Position Duties

A Communicable Disease Health Educator is a public health professional responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating health education programs focused on the prevention and control of communicable diseases, in collaboration with the HIV Coordinator. This role supports community outreach, health promotion, and disease surveillance efforts, working closely with internal teams, healthcare providers, and community partners to help reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide HIV/Syphilis testing at community events in addition to on call testing.
  • Identifies the health education needs of the Communicable Disease Program based information relevant to the targeted at-risk populations.
  • Conduct community outreach and engagement activities targeting high-risk populations.
  • Provides HIV training programs for other health professionals or community health workers.
  • Promotes HIV education/discussions in community agencies.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and educational materials.
  • Prepares and disseminates educational and informational materials.
  • Participates in Community meetings and other planning efforts as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of all work and assist in fulfilling the grant deliverables and reporting requirements.
  • Performs various duties in support of section and district operations

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, social, behavioral, or biological sciences or a directly related field from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of experience in public health education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified as a Health Education Specialist (CHES)
  • Strong understanding of communicable disease transmission, prevention strategies, and public health principles.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and data management systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for outreach activities.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends for events or planning efforts.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally and respond to public health emergencies as needed.

Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner and leaders encourages all employees to engage in regular physical activities and to make lifestyle choices that promote health and well-being. The use of physical breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and assist employees in meeting their physical goals.  A maximum of 30 minutes in a given workday may be used to engage in physical activities, generally in the form of two 15-minute breaks or one 30-minute break.
