The Instructional Specialist AVID is a member of the Division of Instruction and is primarily responsible for support services related to instructional and implementation of the AVID program. Duties include providing expertise and support to campuses in the implementation of the instructional program, planning and initiating appropriate activities to support the written goals and objective of the District, and complying with state and federal requirements. The Instructional Specialist AVID reports to the Chief Academic Officer; Innovative Programs.

Facilitate professional development on research based, proven effective pedagogy

Facilitate professional development in AVID Curriculum materials that are created to ensure success for those students in the academic middle and to prepare them for coursework that will enable them to enter into colleges and universities prepared for the rigors of postsecondary success

Facilitate training of tutors and educators in the Socratic method of questioning to create student centered tutorials
-
Perform site visits to all campuses to help with data collection to measure program success and assess quality assurance measures

Ensure fidelity to the essential components of AVID to create schoolwide and districtwide college going cultures
-
Work with AVID consultants who will come in to conduct workshops and professional development opportunities
-
Move beyond the classroom teacher and provide support and training for counselors and administrators

Ensure all required AVID report are submitted on time to AVID Center and utilize AVID’s customized, comparative reports to drive instruction and decision making
-
Provide support to all campuses with required evidence gathering for the Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI) and write reports in a timely manner.

Prove training in the use of the National AVID Website.

Provide intensive support for new AVID member sites and teachers
-
Work closely with and solicit support from the AVID Center and the AVID Southern Region Office to effectively implement and refine AVID for our District.

Increase opportunities for rigor for all students by talking with counseling department to ensure the AVID application process is followed with AVID students being placed in at least one Pre-AP or course of rigor class with all high school students having at least 1 AP course prior to graduation.

Work with middle schools towards the goal of 100% of the student in the academic middle taking Algebra I and/or another high school credit bearing course.

Attend and support AVID campus site team meetings at each AVID site.

Coordinate the District AVID Summer Institute travel and facilitate the AVID Summer Institute site team meeting.
