The Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the stewardship of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. The Collection is currently accepting resumes for the position of Facilities Technician.


The Facilities Technician is a journey-level position which will assist in the operation and maintenance of The Collections’ built environment which includes the buildings, grounds, and facilities. Working within The Collection requires an exceptional attention to detail and an ability to provide excellent customer service to all stakeholders. The Facilities Technician will be expected to work independently and exercise good judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive occasional instruction or assistance from the Facilities Manager as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of HNOC’s Facilities Department. Exercises no supervision over staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities below are essential core functions of this position. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Provide general building maintenance services throughout all HNOC properties.
  • Heavy emphasis on maintaining walls and finishes.
  • Patch and repair sheetrock. Ceiling repairs. Moisture remediation.
  • Interior and exterior prep and paint. Vinyl wall coverings.
  • Assist in emergency preparedness operations and in recovery/re-entry after the emergency.
  • Inspect HNOC facilities and equipment daily for safety concerns and monitor for proper usage. Report issues to leadership.
  • Interact with other departments and the public in a positive manner. Receive and respond to questions, concerns, and complaints; offer resolution or escalate to leadership.
  • Daily rounds of buildings for observation of issues requiring repair.
  • Monitor and escort vendors while onsite.

Required Job Qualifications:

Below are the minimum requirements necessary for this position.


Experience:

  • One to three years of journey level experience in construction or building maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Highly proficient with sheetrock and related wall finishes.
  • Highly proficient with interior and exterior paint and prep.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing.
  • Knowledge of historic properties; construction and sustainment.
  • General knowledge and appreciation of decorative arts, as well as object handling and conservation concerns.
  • “Safety First” Mindset with a thorough understanding of OSHA standards, occupational hazards, and safety precautions and procedures common to the skilled facilities trades.
  • Ability to create and maintain a list of experts and contractors who effectively resolve problems in and on the properties and manage those relationships for the benefit of The Collection.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with others as well as demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, schematics, and similar documents, both printed and electronic.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to be flexible and responsive to an evolving work environment.
  • Good physical condition with ability to lift 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position, move throughout the properties and in other settings, operate a computer and other office machinery, ascend/descend and traverse heights and low levels, position self to work at workstation and in small areas and monitor the movement of or personally move objects to low, medium and/or high levels. Regularly move objects of up to 50 pounds. This position consistently communicates with co-workers and others and observes, inspects, and assesses buildings and structures. Occasional exposure to mold, mildew, or other similar contaminants/residues.
