Job Description:

We are looking for a Community and Neighborhoods Liaison!

About the Position:

This role will connect the Department of Community and Neighborhoods, City Council, other city departments, community councils, and residents across the city.  

You will support engagement, communications, and outreach efforts for the Department’s seven divisions: Planning, Transportation, Housing Stability, Engineering, Youth and Family, Arts Council, and Building Services.  

In this position, you’ll help make city initiatives more accessible and relevant to residents. You will create content for social media, newsletters, and other communication channels; write clear and engaging public-facing materials; and represent the Department at community events, tabling opportunities, and public meetings. 

The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who can translate technical information into compelling stories and work independently in a fast-paced environment. As a key member of our team, you will develop creative strategies to promote City projects, enhance our online presence, and strengthen connections between City government and the communities we serve. 

Position Salary Range:

E26 - $60,941/yr. to $83,111/yr.

The established market rate for this position is $83,111/yr.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Builds community networks, develops relationships, fosters strong ties with neighborhood groups and communities, and promotes public engagement. Provides project updates, develops and disseminates educational and interpretive materials, event notices, and program information through social media, mailers, tabling sessions, and community events. Plans and executes publicity initiatives and other events.

  • Performs complex analytical duties that include gathering data, conducting surveys and analytical studies, and developing comprehensive information packages.

  • Applies knowledge about organizations and citizens in the area assigned in order to respond proactively instead of reactively to the problems, concerns and complaints cited.  Provides assistance and information to the public relating to City policies, processes, and procedures. 

  • Responds to emerging high profile and sensitive community issues.

  • Analyzes problems and policy issues that arise, develops strategies to solve the problems, and ensures communication between the city and community groups.  

  • Empowers residents on how to help solve the problems themselves.

  • Identifies and follows emerging trends and issues.

  • Attends meetings with agencies, businesses, community councils and other groups to acquire information on issues regarding city services. Facilitates community meetings to resolve disputes or mitigate grievances between citizens and city government. When problems are identified in the neighborhoods, assists by investigating what the City can do, along with the residents, to discover solutions and resolve the problems.

  • Develops community relations and citizen participation in city government. Assists community leaders to effectively participate in government, and make government accessible to all citizens. Assists in organizing neighborhood activities that promote a sense of community, ownership and leadership among residents.

  • Participates in or coordinates special projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Management, Sociology or related subject, and two years related experience. Education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

  • Strong written, oral, and public presentation skills.  Proven track record in the establishment and maintenance of strong relationships with all levels of staff and management in the public and private sectors.

  • Ability to work in a face-paced work environment.

  • Ability to travel for participation in various assigned work events, sites, and locations.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or education in working with diverse communities.

  • Prior experience participating in community-based research.

  • Prior work experience in a municipality, state or other governmental entity.

 Working Conditions:

  • Light physical activity, generally comfortable working conditions. Some exposure to heat, cold, dust, out of doors, etc. Frequent driving of an automobile.

  • Frequent stress as a result of human behavior. Odd hours of work, including evenings and weekends.
